I don't think this information has been posted yet. Looks like the Commissioner is really serious about reducing the backlog and recognizes it will only get worse before it gets better. The final locations have been selected for ten offices. Five offices are not yet final. The offices are projected to be opened by the end of 2011. Good luck to those of you who would like to get one of these locations. Pix.
Hearing Offices:
Rochester, New York Paterson, New Jersey Augusta, Georgia Hoover, Alabama St. Paul, Minnesota El Paso, Texas Columbia, Missouri Moreno Valley, California
Satellite Office
Reno, Nevada National Hearing Center
St. Louis, Missouri
Locations not yet final
Hearing Offices Tennessee - Jackson or Franklin Indiana - Muncie or Terre Haute
Satellite Offices
Marquette, MI/Upper Peninsula area Eureka, CA area Montana - Helena or Missoula

Wow. So these are in addition to the ten that are supposed to open in 2010?

I heard that the ALJ baseline strength is going up to 1600 at Deputy Commish Froster's speech during training last week. He also mention the new offices, but didn't specify location. Thanks for the additional information, Pixie!

In the early 1980's I worked with then Congresswoman Marge Roukema to open a hearing office in Hackensack. All we were able to get was a hearing site! And the cases were assigned to the judges in White Plains because at the time they had no work and without this workload their office would have had to close. A hearing office in Bergen County is long overdue - more than 25 years over due! I hope for the sake of the folks I left in NJ when I transferred to CT that this becomes a reality. Joyce Krutick Craig now retired but formerly an ALJ in Newark, NJ (18 years) and Hartford, CT (approximately 10 years)

I am interested in the ones that are supposed to open in 2010. I got a score that is fairly high up but only put two locations on my geographic preferences (one office isn't hiring I hear; the other is a new office slated to open in the fall of 2010). I'm worried the office won't open before Oct. 2010 when my score "expires." Anyone heard anything about the new "2010" offices?

there is an agency powerpoint floating around with the projected opening months for the 2010 offices. Some will be open by next summer, some not till the fall so it really depends on which specific office you are interested in. Also, it may be unlikely that newly hired ALJ's will be assigned to the brand new offices. The agency prefers experienced ALJ's to get the office off the ground. Having said that, new ALJ's were hired for the Seven Fields office in 2008 after it had only been open for maybe 4-5 months?

Any way we could get those offices and their projected opening months posted here? I'm interested in Topeka, KS. I hear there will be 5 judges there. I do wonder if they will actually get 5 judges to come to Topeka, KS! On the other hand, if it's those who move, maybe they'll be from Kansas City -- my other city of choice.

I hear about three types of hearing sites: permanent hearing sites, satellite offices and hearing offices. The lead post states that a hearing office will be established in El Paso. I know that there is currently a site without ALJs in Harlingen, and the Commissioner announced that Harlingen is getting a satellite office (with two or three ALJs, as I understand it). Would someone please explain the differences between the three types of sites, and also advise whether EL Paso is getting a full hearing office, equivalent for example to the Ft. Worth HO?

Valard,
El Paso was a remote hearing site, with no judges and 3 hearing rooms run out of Albuquerque. Only thing is - half of Albuquerque's cases were from El Paso. Most likely - this will be a 5 to 6 judge site (my guess) and will cover Southern New Mexico - up to Silver City and probably over to Eagel Pass, TX. Permanent hearing sites is what is in El Paso now - hearing rooms (some with video) and no permanaet staff assigned to the area. Satellite office - permaent staff and 3 to 4 judges run out of another office. (McAlester OK only has 3 judges, but is a full office - not sure why the exception.) A hearing office is just that - full up with management and staff - say 6 to 20 judges. Hope this helps. The Penguin

Actually, there are several "full" hearing offices with 4 judges. A satallite office may even have just one judge, with support staff. The key difference is a satellite office has many of its management funtions handled by the full office it is affiliated with.

Does anyone know if there is going to be an office opened in Auburn, WA? I thought at one time that this location was a possibility.

The new hearing office in Topeka, Kansas is scheduled to open in September of 2010 with five judges. I Don't think they will have any difficulty finding 5 judges who want to go there.

Pixie's post was about offices in 2011. Tallahasee is supposed to open next year, along with Atlanta South among others. I remember Tampa was promised another office by COSS. I think I remember Ft. Myers as a possible Satellite office. Florida is not being snubbed.

Does anyone know how the agency selects judges for new offices? There is no transfer list for new offices. If a number of existing ALJ request a slot in a new office, how does the agency determine which judges will be transferred?

I believe for recently opened offices the agency has advertised them to sitting ALJs. I believe they have even paid relocation expenses. [].

Two questions: first-is that avatar picture Pixie uses really her? Second, will they staff with new offices with transfers or picks from the list or both?
