November 30, 2007
NOTIFICATION TO ALJ CANDIDATE
We are pleased to inform you that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has certified your name to the Social Security Administration’s Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR) for the position of Administrative Law Judge (ALJ), AL-3. The entrance base salary for an ALJ is $97,100 per year plus locality pay based on the geographic location. Current or former Federal civilian employees may be eligible for a higher base salary but will be determined at time of selection.
ODAR, with its headquarters located in Falls Church, Virginia, is the highest appellate level of the Social Security Administration. Our employees, which number almost 7,000, include approximately 1,100 ALJs who are in 141 hearing offices across the country. Our ALJs hold hearings and make and issue decisions on appeals from determinations made under Titles II (Retirement, Survivors and Disability Insurance) and XVI (Supplemental Security Income) of the Social Security Act.
Enclosed with this notice are:
1. Interview and Background Questionnaire;
2. Background Questionnaire Consent and Release Form;
3. Summary of Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act; and
4. Optional Form 306-Declaration for Federal Employment
OPM has already forwarded to you the Federal Employment Availability Inquiry (FEAI) which lists the locations where we are currently recruiting that match the locations you have on file at OPM. You have the option of declining all locations by stating this on the FEAI. You may also indicate an interest in all or some of the locations by placing an “X” only after the location(s) in which you would accept if an ALJ position were offered to you. Please consider this very carefully because you may be required to travel to areas outside your duty station. In addition, you will be expected to remain employed at that location for at least two years. Even after the conclusion of two years, the likelihood of moving to another location is quite limited since reassignments are made based upon the workload needs of the agency.
If your employment or personal information has changed since filing with OPM, please include the information with your reply reflecting the corrections, i.e., position, telephone numbers, email address, or home address. Please include your cell phone number so we can more easily contact you.
If you are interested in being considered you must download and complete:
(1) Optional Form 306, Declaration for Federal Employment. Please complete items 1-17a and provide details in item 16 if you answer “YES” to questions 9-14.
(2) Interview and Background Questionnaire. This information will be provided to our contractor to conduct a background check prior to your scheduled interview.
(3) Consent and Release Form. Carefully read, sign and date as it will be forwarded to the contractor.
The above three documents and the FEAI must be faxed to 703-605-8451 no later than December 7 or you will not be considered for an ALJ position. Documents sent by mail will not be accepted. Please note that if you are declining all locations, only return the FEAI stating your reason for declination.
In the next few weeks, you will be contacted to schedule a personal interview which will be held between January 7 and February 1, 2008, in Falls Church, VA. The interview does not represent an offer of employment.
If selected, you must be prepared to first report to your duty station for Phase I of your ALJ Orientation during which you will meet and begin to work with a mentor ALJ. Phase II involves classroom training in Baltimore, Maryland. You will then report back to your duty station at the conclusion of Phase II for Phase III of your orientation where you will begin holding hearings and continue to work with your mentor. While we expect to have all successful candidates enter on duty during the spring of 2008, the exact dates have yet to be determined. If you have any questions, you may contact Ms. Pat Rocheford on 703-605-8448 (pat.rocheford@ssa.gov); Ms. Susan Martinelli on 703-605-8445 (susan.martinelli@ssa.gov); or our main telephone number of 703-605-8440.
Sincerely,
