None of the new hearing offices are close enough to coming online to be hired from an FY09 certificate or an FY10 certificate that would be filled in 2009. New ALJ's were hired last year for the hearing office that opened in Seven Fields, PA. Seven Fields is essentially a Pittsburgh North office. It was not listed as a separate city on the certificate because it was not open when candidates had to make their selections. The agency considered for Seven Fields candidates who either listed a preference for all hearing offices or listed Pittsburgh on their geographic preferences.
At least one of the new hearing offices (Fayetteville, NC) will be opened in essentially 2 phases. The initial phase will really be nothing more than an expanded video site with no on-site ALJ's/support staff. A "real" hearing office will be created later on. When later on will be is anyone's guess as is how many of the other offices will be opened in a similar manner. The only new office I am aware of that will definitely open as a real office from the start is Atlanta South. Site selection has been completed and it will be in Covington, GA (which is neither part of metro Atlanta or "South" of Atlanta but I suppose that name is good enough for government work)

Newton County has been considered part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area since at least 1996. If one examines a map of Georgia, one sees that I-20 East bends to the south before resuming its mind-numbing course to Augusta. I-20 passes just to the south of Covington. Location-wise the Covington office will be a fraction of a degree of latitude south of the Atlanta Downtown office. Thus, "Atlanta South".

Well, "Atlanta North" is on Clairmont Rd, and probably sould be "Atlanta Midtown." The other, should be "Atlanta East" if we are going to be really technical. I still think Athens would have been a better choice, but then, I am only a Beagle - what do I know.

As a former Athenian, and an incorrigible Bulldog and Athenophile, I would probably have had a coronary if I saw Athens among the cities!

But it is pretty far up Clairmont Road, past Century Center North and it is on the north side of the street.

Pardon my French.

No; you will be taking the $#%^ing test-2d Edition.
Sorry for messing with you.
If you are on the register, when they are ready to fill those offices, you will be given an opportunity to amend your GAL.

I have no idea why the Topeka office would be on anyone's selection list. This office is not scheduled to open until September 2010. If the contemplated hires take place next spring I would anticipate it might be on their list of cities. Topeka is not Hawaii but.....it is close to the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Washburn University, Fort Riley and only 50 or 60 miles from Kansas City and it is the State Capitol and it will be a fully staffed office with all the latest gadgets (I hope).

Why would anyone list it? Because it was one of the geoprefs you could pick. OPM did not supply any information about which offices would actually be hiring (or even exist) during the life of the register. So helpful to be dragged through a one-year process including two trips to d.c. on my own nickel to find out that there aren't even any vacancies. I had as much luck picking geoprefs as I do picking stocks! Z
