I've done the walk in and announce departure thing and it's awful. I had interviewed for a job and never heard anything. I was hired for a great job and six months was offered the other position. My boss had gone out on a limb to hire me and I felt awful but it was too great of an opportunity. My boss was very understanding but I wonder what is going to happen when contacted. My rule of thumb has always been it's not my bosses business when I apply but if we reach the point that I get an interview and there will be a refernce check it is time to go visit the boss. That's my rule of thumb as well.

The announcement may have been awful but I don't detect anything here to suggest that you have not done the job well nor have you disappointed your boss. This is an opportunity to be a part of the ALJ Corps. It is a very select group with extraordinary responsibilities and powers. You are invested with independence and stature commensurate with that power. To feel guilty to seemingly abandon your boss is understandable but the opportunity to serve in this Corps is an honor that all too many do not get to share. I know I didn't "get it" until I began to serve.

Yes- to the references. Some references were called yesterday. People might want to let their references know to expect a call pretty soon.

I wonder if there's a correlation between those who have their interviews scheduled already (or were previously interviewed) vs. those who haven't been scheduled yet in terms of references being contacted. It would seem that the first priority would be getting interviews scheduled before they send stuff off to the contractor.

Sorry for the reference redundancy.
This whole process is moving amazingly fast!

Just in case you were waiting for your interview to alert your references, get busy. All of my references have been contacted and I have not yet had my interview.

I was called as a reference for someone who has not interviewed yet. The caller indicated he was incredibly busy making reference calls.

At least one of my references was called today. My interview is Monday.

And still, there seems to be no discernible rhyme or reason to the order in which these calls were/are being made.

I just realized that the contact information for one of my references has changed. Any suggestions on who should be contacted with the corrected information? Might I expect someone to contact me for better information?

Hi, 24kgg: I had the same situation. Don't wait for someone to contact you. Just resubmit the affected page with the corrected information and a cover sheet explaining why. Worked for me. Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestion. As it turns out, one of my references had the telephone number from the investigator which she passed along to me. I made the call with the corrected information.

I have learned that all of my references (except judicial--I didn't ask) have been contacted, except a reference for a job I held in the early 80's. I am guessing that for employment references, they only go back 15 years, which is what SSA considers as the appropriate time period for past relevant work. Can anyone verify this based on older employment references not being contacted? Just curious so I can quit hounding the old reference, who claims he never got a call. He was on a cruise all last week, but told me nobody calling on behalf of SSA left a message for him.

In past years, SSA did not contact ALL of the references. The common wisdom seemed to be that they needed only a certain number of references for each candidate and once that number was reached, they moved on to the next candidate.

Interesting. It would make sense to me that remote references might not be contacted. Some of mine I no longer had contact info for, which when you go back 20 plus years, is pretty common.
None of my references have apparently been contacted yet. I know that means nothing at this point, since we have no idea what system (if any) is being used by the contractor. Still, I'll be happier when I hear back from someone!
