Can someone be on two certs at one time e.g. SSA and Animal Control? I apologize if this is a stupid question. Yes. I remember a case in 2007 where a high scorer was on both SSA and another agency's cert at the same time. Said individual was hired by the other agency before the SSA interview even took place. So I'm fairly certain you can be on two certs at the same time.

So I'm fairly certain you can be on two certs at the same time. Your memory is accurate. You can be on multiple certificates because any number of agencies can ask for a cert at once. It just happens that with the much smaller numbers hired at once in other agencies that only people with the highest OPM scores will possibly be on 2 or more certs at once. Most other agencies with ALJs (not SSA or OHMA) are concentrated in the DC area, so if someone does not have DC on their availability even with a high OPM score the odds drop that they will hit 2 certs. I think OMHA hired for Cleveland, Miami and Irvine, California in 2007 at the same time ODAR had the first cert pulled.

How do you go about reducing the number of geographic locations on your list? Just came across this in my saved documents (regarding the GAL - Geographic Availability List), received when I was on one of the certs: The information you provide on this form will be reported back to OPM once SSA has completed the selection process for these duty locations. Therefore, it is important that you consider the following information when completing this form: • If you decline a location(s), OPM will remove your name from further consideration for that location(s). • You will not be able to reinstate a location from which you have been removed until the next ALJ vacancy announcement open period. • If you decline two (2) job offers, your name will be suspended from the register for one (1) year or until the register is terminated, whichever occurs first. REGION LOCATION ACCEPT 01 Boston, MA 01 Hartford, CT 01 Manchester, NH 01 New Haven, CT 01 Providence, RI 01 Springfield, MA ...etc. The above language is directly from the GAL (received on an SSA cert). The cities for which you indicated availability and which match with those on the cert are then listed (I've only listed some) and you are asked to indicate those locations for which you wish to be considered. (These instructions are also given with the OPM application, but you won't know which cities will be on a cert until you are placed on one.) Advice, for those in a position to update the GAL during an open application period, be sure to look at any new hearing office locations and/or cities not previously listed in the application and carefully follow the instructions to update your GAL while the application is open (which the last couple of years has been for only a few short - two or three - days!). When the application closes, you are not able to update your GAL with OPM); other threads on this Board give horror stories on technical problems as well as success stories regarding this subject.
