I think we need to ask ourselves what is to be gained by allowing only those registered as "members" to view the general discussion forum. If lurkers register, aren't they still likely to, I don't know, lurk.

If lurkers register, aren't they still likely to, I don't know, lurk. Then, why not let non-members post to the general forum without registering NRG ALJ? The better question is what would be lost in blocking non-members from seeing the general discussion forum??? I don't have a horse in this race as to whether it should be open only to members or to all, but I personally would appreciate more participation by all, so as to increase the vitality of the Board to its fullest potential.

Not sure why, but I'm getting a bit of a hostility vibe. Look, I don't have a dog in this fight either. I'm just asking a question. If ALJD and the forum elders decide to change the operating procedure, I'll be signing in every time just like others. But the question still remains, will that really increase participation.

I think we should let non-members view. We are here to provide information to individuals interested in becoming ALJs. Why do we want to keep this information from interested individuals. This site has helped so many we should not limit access.
I think many don't join on the first visit but join after viewing a few times and deciding they have something to say or just want to be part of the group looking to be ALJs. If we limit access, we limit our own access to new information and insight. I actually think allowing viewing only to members will decrease posts and participation.

I was not trying to be hostile at all in my answer NRG ALJ and I apologize to you if it came off that way. You ask will participation be increased by limiting access only to members? The answer is clearly NO as only members may participate now. The non-members cannot participate, other than by looking at the Board. I, like you, do not care to most extent what the Board leaders do, but I always stay signed in and try to state an opinion, if I feel it might be helpful or to play the "devil's advocate" on an issue.

I don't disagree with your opinion either Chinook. I did exactly as you stated three years ago and then became a member. We have many members now (over 2500), but participation by them is usually limited to around 30 to 40 % of the total over the last year. It ebbs and it flows depending upon the issues brought up.

That's a really good point chinook. I also "lurked" for a while before becoming a member. But then again, if there had been a "register to view only" policy, then I would have registered. Registering isn't exactly a difficult process, but it is a small process. And really, not much information is revealed in the registration process other than an email, unless you want to reveal more. It's all good, either way.

As an outsider applying, it was a long time before I had anything valuable to post. So yes, I was a lurker for a while, but certainly was not withholding any valuable information. Once I had something to contribute, I did. I would presume some of the current lurkers are in a similar position. Maybe just request that people sign in.
