I stayed at the State Plaza both nights. It seemed to be an older hotel, but was immaculately clean and I was surprised to find my room came with a full kitchen. I walked to and from OPM - 5-10 minutes and then ubered to the Embassy Suites the next day for an afternoon SI. It was a very smooth trip, but a gamble because of the unknown SI time. I would likely make the same arrangements if I had it to do over. Let's hope there is no do over for anyone! Believe me, job or no job, I will never do this over. 😱

The advice on where to stay is so helpful. After reading everyone's postings about their own experiences, and looking at Google Maps, I booked State Plaza for my testing next month. I was pleasantly surprised by the price compared to some of the other options discussed on the board. And there's a Dunkin' Donuts on the walk between the hotel and OPM. I love their coffee.

Awesome!!! and I'm sure you realize the SI is in Va. Alexandria, i think? but you can take a metro or uber over there so not a big deal. Good luck!!!

Yes, I do and thank you for pointing it out in case I didn't. I looked into staying at the Embassy Suites where the SI is being conducted, but it was much more expensive. I'll take a taxi over, and the taxi fare will be less than the hotel rate difference, for sure. Since the SI won't take all of day two, I plan to do the tourist thing and State Plaza Hotel being so close to the White House and the Mall will be nice.

Agreed. i stayed in Foggy Bottom too(last year) and loved being in that part of DC. i was not at State Plaza but i know others who stayed there and really liked it. it was a very cool looking building from the outside and looked like it would be great place to stay.

I will definitely report back on my stay. It has good reviews from others on this board, and online. Now I just gotta find my Smithsonian membership card...
