A tale of two transfers: Two ALJs in city A, both desiring to go to city B; same region, same state (excuse the redundancy). ALJ 1 takes 3 years to get through the process. ALJ 2 (that would be me), #5 on the list, gets there in 13 months once eligible (the mandatory 90 day waiting period).
For me, it was being at the right place at the right time and several other ALJs that declined (I am sure that they declined JUST for me);-).
There are a ton of variables...but here is another story for consideration, however non-useful.
Congrats Hamster!

Sealaw, while I cannot speak for other Region 3 offices, there are several vacancies in Philadelphia East and they just advertised for a HOCALJ in Dover.

USN Judge: Thanks...and congrats to you, too! However, I can't imagine why you'd want to move from where you are (just kidding). At least, you can duck over to what we used to fondly call the "Taj Majal" for free CLE!
Sandiferhands: I put myself on the transfer list for the office to which I'm moving after being an ALJ 91 days. So, this transfer took me about 21 months. I am going to a smallish office where the incumbents stayed for a long, long time. My current office is a 170 mile round trip for me...but my gaining office is about a 7-10 minute drive from home. So, this worked out great for me--just wish it had happened before my youngest was a high school senior. I have been on the transfer list for the other two places--correction, three places--for only about a week. I believe I'm ineligible to transfer for two years, but hope to get to Reno (first choice) in two or three years. Then I'll look for retirement property in Mammoth Lakes, California and, eventually, hike, camp, and fish after I retire. If only ODAR would open a satellite office there! Maybe one with a ski-in/ski-out feature for the claimants.
While this transfer took me 22 months, it can be pretty hit or miss. One of my colleagues transferred in about two or three months, if I recall. In any event, it wasn't long at all.
Best, Hamster

Transfers ARE occurring in region 9. One from Fresno to LA approved, moving in April. Also, 3 from Vegas, unknown to where, one becoming a HOCALJ. Info is from the ALJs themselves and from a reliable source. The Region 9 RCALJ has been historically resistant to transfers, so this is good news, indicating he may be getting orders from Falls Church now.

Correction on Vegas. Two are retiring, one is transferring to be a HOCALJ.

Sealaw, while I cannot speak for other Region 3 offices, there are several vacancies in Philadelphia East and they just advertised for a HOCALJ in Dover. Thank you!! Dover seems to be a popular transfer/GAL spot for all the folks who want to be near their mid-atlantic home. I've also noticed by reading older threads, that Philly East sees a lot of movement. That always makes me nervous (bad boss?, unfriendly staff?, mean people in general?), even though I am a 'glass half full' type. Or is it just located in a sketchy neighborhood with no SEPTA train stop?

NORs around the corner with the movement that is being reported. Looks like the March prediction is not that far off. Still two weeks left in February and it would be great if they published the scores already.

I heard some folks are moving out of PR too so there might be hiring to backfill for those folks because I do not believe there are any requests seeking to transfer into any of the PR offices.

Sea, If you can get to Philly East, take it. It's pretty good office and SEPTA Market East station is about three blocks away. DRPA high speed line stops two blocks away.

Being that I am not an ALJ....I simply offered hearsay from another ALJ.....YMMV.

That actually could be. I heard that RCALC King was preventing transfers of all kinds during the last few months. With the transfers inside the region, I was hoping he loosened up. Can he do that, though? Doesn't falls church trump him?

This could either be good news or bad news. I heard from a reliable source that an email was sent to ALJs informing them that no new hires or transfers will be sent to region 9 because as a whole region 9 has to many ALJs.....GAL is going to be big....BIG.....I fear...despite already being big..... Does your reliable source say anything about region 3? As a matter of fact, can anybody out there shed some light on transfer/future hiring activity in regions 2 and 3? While anything is possible, hiring in regions 1, 2 & 3 has been minimal since 2009.

I've noticed. :-( Thanks, at least I stopped holding by breath for my score and my hope of a Region 3 ODAR.

I heard some folks are moving out of PR too so there might be hiring to backfill for those folks because I do not believe there are any requests seeking to transfer into any of the PR offices. I think the main reason there is no one on the transfer list for Puerto Rico offices is because they need to be bilingual judges. The hearings are in Spanish for the Puerto Rican claimants and the ALJs there also hold video hearings for other offices in the region, like the Virgin Islands, NY and NJ.

As an 'outie' I did not know about that office and failed to include Philly on my GAL, as it is not in a commuting distance to home. However, with everything that I have learned on this board, IF we ever get to update our GAL (2015 refresh?) then I will include it. There are direct flghts from there to home, and apparently that is what one may have to resort to in order to get an ALJ position. I have learned my lesson! Thanks.

I read that this weekend, what a sad state of affairs, as it is a beautiful island and there are many good parts of PR. I also heard the ODAR there was involved in a scandal, so that could also be the reason for the exodus.
