Fully agree with mch135! Maybe they'll open up everyone's ability to redo their GALs after the initial city-by-city certs, which we are expecting based on the leaked OPM email. Survival of the fittest! There has to be ways to attrit folks in this process. There are simply not enough ALJ gigs for the large number of applicants who want the job. The testing process attritted folks and so did the application process. They had the application open for two whole weeks and anyone that saw the announcement should have done their due dilligence and investigated about the job. If you google ALJ application or ALJ selection processs or any similiar search you will wind up getting results to this board. So its a bummer that some folks limited themselves to popular cities but that is part of the attrition process. Its not cheap to run these types of application so there may very well open up the register for GAL Changes but that is down the road at least a couple of years and SSA probably has to tell OPM that they have run through the entire register and are not happy with the candidates they are getting.

I've never met a gal I had much control over. That's because you keep calling your gals "wide."

I wish the best for everybody in this process, but futuressaalj nailed it as far as the process. The application clearly informed everybody on how the system works and if you didn't follow the information about "high 3" for that city and deduce the need for plenty of cities in order to be one of the "high 3", well that falls in the golden rule of "it sucks to be you."
I listed every city that I could live in so that I had 88 chances of being the "high 3" that MUST be considered. There will be no changes to the GAL until hundreds are hired off of this 900+ register. I will strike PR as I can not speak Spanish, but the other 85 will stay there even though I have a high NOR (thanks to my 10 points as a 30% disabled Gulf War Vet).
Good luck to all, but it is what it always has been and it will never be what you would like it to be.

It seems to me that 10 point Veterans ought to be able to add cities to their GAL each quarter; it's cheaper than having each one of them go through the entire process for a second time. I'll proceed in that manner and post the results!

The simple truth is, the wider the gal the more chances you have of making the cert and getting a job. A wide open gal means you would take the job anywhere. Really? Would you really pack up your family, sell your home and move across the country to some small town you never heard of for a job? Really. My kids are grown. Mrs. Midnight thinks getting posted in Anchorage means she gets a fur coat. She keeps asking, "Can we really go far, far away from the kids for a little while?" So, in an usual turn of how events normally workout, it could be win-win-win for Ace. Practically unheard of. Anchorage would be awesome!

Not for anything, but tomorrow is the 12th day since the NORs came out. Cert notices went out 12 days after the NORs in 2010. Looking for balance and consistency in the universe.... Here's something I thought I'd never see... observer participating in a little speculative tea-leaf reading. Just a little. I happened to recall the 12 days, as I had looked it up when the NORs came out. So, when 3/24 rolled around, I did a little math I'm not suggesting there IS any balance and consistency in this little universe, though.

BTW tigerlaw - and all other 10-pointers: there's been some discussion on this board about how "fair" the vet pref is.
What I think many of us want to say instead is - thank you for your service and we appreciate the sacrifices you made to serve and even more that you were permanently disabled in service of our country.

If the reference about questioning the vet preference related to my post, that is not what I said. Nuf said. I'm going to walk by the framed flag presented to my disabled vet husband, who I discussed this with, and finish my work for tonight. My children, my family, understand the sacrifice and I thank you too.

Only two ALJs in Anchorage, but one or both may be gettin' cabin fever.

If the reference about questioning the vet preference related to my post, Nope. Not trying to flame or scold anyone, just trying to thank folks - including your husband and you - for their willingness to put others ahead of themselves for awhile and serve.

I'll proceed in that manner and post the results! That is really not going to help them dpageks--right now I am stuck with the GAL I chose--I have 66 locations and took a couple of days with my wife to come up with the locations where we would move. I put a few that we were borderline on because my understanding is that if I made the cert then I could remove locations and that is what is going to happen if I am lucky enough to make a cert--there are a couple of locations where we are not willing to move anymore. But back to your original proposal. No matter what my GAL is, even if I change it on a quarterly basis---all I am going to get is one Agency Interview--that is it. So lets say I get interviewed and do not get a job offer after being on a cert in the near future (I can only hope). I can change my GAL all I want, I am not going to get another interview and SSA is probably not going to hire me.

I lived in Anchorage for 15 amazing and happy years. If you go with a sense of adventure and wonder, it's not Crapland, it's the Greatland. You could do a lot worse than fly fishing in the midnight sun or watching the northern lights from a mountain cabin. If given the chance to go there, you might be pleasantly surprised.

I presumed "Crapland" was slang for California. It's a rebuttable presumption.
By the way, this is my attempt to crack a joke.

Just a point of information, not all 10 point veterans are permanently disabled. Receiving a Purple Heart gets 10 points and not all Purple Heart recipients are permanently disabled nor receive disability pensions. This does not take anything away from their honor or sacrifice, just a clarification, from a brother veteran.

I presumed "Crapland" was slang for California. California has 17 ODARs. Each and everyone has a waiting list. Three are in double digits. The number one ALJ on the list for San Diego has been waiting for a transfer since 2001. That's no typo. 13 years. Also, rumor has it that Region 9 is overstaffed (for ALJs), so the likelihood of a new ALJ getting a California offer is slim.

In fact, the most recent ALJ transfer to San Diego (last year) was on the waiting list for over 10 years.

In fact, the most recent ALJ transfer to San Diego (last year) was on the waiting list for over 10 years. Wow! I guess that would qualify as a "popular city." I'm partial to Florida myself, but they do call San Diego "America's Finest City" and having lived there for a while, I would say they are not far off with that claim! We loved Balboa Park.

Funky, you are wise and circumspect, which makes your posts well worth the read. You will be an excellent judge. Thanks FTF. I wish you worked for opm Sorry, DC is not on my GAL!
