Toledo and Mt. Pleasant both have openings at this time and I feel sure both will take a few of the newbies before it is all said and done...

I do not think they will fill any of those cities to capacity, but I could be wrong because it is likely whomever gets a position there may want to transfer elsewhere given the next opportunity. Mt. Pleasant hasn't been at full capacity much in the last several years since it opened.

And there mpd is the secret, if they fill them now, there are many on the transfer lists ahead of them (especially now that line Judges can list 5 instead of 3 and HC Judges can list only God knows how many)and they will be useful to them for quite a while, especially if they hire 90 this year and 90 next year. Some of those people could sit for 2-3 years.. JMH and WA opinion as usual..

But, I could rattle off about 20 more, 16 of which would be on the list. What we're going to need is some good intel on who actually went from whence to where on the transfer list, and a realistic - "big picture" of these approximately 200+ vacancies actually are. Even a region by region breakdown would help, but really just focus us all on Regions 4, 5 and 6, which we're already doing. That's still A LOT of real estate.

I'd be interested in the 20 cities, of which 16 would be on the list.

If there's no current ALJ who is able to rattle off a decent amount of ODARs already taken by transfers, then how about us jedi knights doing what we do best - wild speculation, guesstimates and crazy ideas of what will be on the 2014 cert. I'll start! The following lovely ODARs in Region 3 will be on the 2014 cert:
Johnston PA Seven Fields PA The WV office of your choice, or all three (at least one has been on almost every single cert since the dawn of time IMHO)
Anyone want to add to R3, or start another Region (calling acemidnight...your WAG is being requested...)

I'll make a WAG for Region 4:
Chattanooga, TN
Florence, AL
Jackson, MS
Tupelo, MS
Montgomery, AL
(And a wildcard would be Atlanta, GA)

(1) I am not expecting this will result in a vacancy, but there was an announcement for an open HOCALJ position in Tampa today. (2) I'm pretty sure Montgomery is getting a couple of transfers in the near future.

Middlesboro KY will have openings--Region 4 as well--HOCALJ leaving, down a couple of Judges, and likely no Transfer Judges available

I agree with Middlesboro, as well - for whatever reason, I thought that was in another region.

Solid list, Funky.
My only question - do you think that 40 of those are doubles?
I'm just trying to count to 90 - I'm thinking it may be closer to 60 locations. Is the NHC a possible fill off this certificate? It will be interesting when they work the transfer list out of there.

I think there could be quite a few doubles Ace. Every single office where I know there are vacancies has more than 1. Its also not uncommon. I read on here, I think, where someone reported being one of 4 or 5 that started in toledo at the same time (IIRC).
Also, I'm not convinced mostlyquiet's report that was quickly taken down (about the 45 cities) was entirely bogus.
Not sure about the nhc question. I think they can put newbies there, but not sure they will. Plus, I think those spots are pretty coveted so not sure how many nhc vacancies there would be.

On the topic of newbies assigned to a nhc, I'd think there would be a couple problems.
One, the agency likes their judges to have a good grasp of the entire hearing process and how all the different parts work together. That's why part of your initial 2 weeks at your first office includes having you sit with different staff members and let them explain and show you their jobs. At nhcs, there are only judges and attorneys, so you miss out on that.
Second, at least in the past, nhc judges were considered supervisory positions because you actually supervised 2 attorneys assigned to you rather than having an attorney "pool" supervised by group supervisors like in the field. That's one major reason the nhc jobs are considered plum assignments. I know the transfer list priority accorded the nhc judges due to their "supervisory" status has purportedly ended, but I dunno if they are no longer considered supervisory. If they still are, I doubt the agency wants a newbie in that role.
maybe the agency doesn't share my concern and I don't think they are absolutely precluded from putting a newbie in an nhc, but practically speaking I doubt they will.

Mt Pleasant will likely get 3, possibly 5. Huntington W Va will get 1 or 2. Forget Florida, California, San Antonio, Kansas City, Dallas, New Orleans, Chicago, Nashville, Charleston SC, Savannah, Atlanta, Lawrence Mass, Long Island, NYC, Boston, Detroit, Tulsa, .... Think Toledo, Mt Pleasant, West Virginia, Indiana, ... Plan on staying in one place 18 to 24 months. The decisions are based on where the most work is -- not just vacancies.

However, I do like a lot of your list as being spot on or close. Good job buddy!
