I say welcome aboard provisionally pubdef until your appeal is decided. The more the merrier. We have all kind of parties here, the best one will be when the second cert from SSA comes out.

I have been away, mercifully cut off from the tyranny of emails and the internet. It looks like I am meant to be an Outsider for a while longer. I am pleased to join the Second Certers (and the Thirds and Fourths if it comes to that).
Maybe we should throw a party?

All right, fine. I should have put it up for a vote. What about SCOB? "Second cert or beyond." It will be much more fun to send out scobbies (scobbys?) that way. Plus, I want to leave it open for all of our 3rd and 4th certers, most likely myself.

So do you start out as a member of SCAB, SCC, or SCOB, or do you start out as a pledge? If so, is there a "Hell Week?" Or is that what the last year has been?
So, being new to this process, what does it mean that there were very few "big cities" on this cert?

Chessparent, Mike and Gary, you three can be SCABs, but I would rather be just be a SCC (Second Cert Club) member. I am not found of SCABs in either derivation of the word. I say it should be known by either acronym depending upon the person's choosing. Also, I do know I could possibly not make the second cert for some unknown reason, but then I will become a TCC (Third Cert Club) member. I choose SCC as my acronym for now. I must admit, I had the same reaction to the "SCAB" designation; however, I think SCOB or scobbie/scobby works just fine (since I didn't post from my phone this morning, I'm bundling a couple of comments into one - although I suppose if I ever want to move to the next "status" on the board, I should be posting everything separately haha).

Make that four. As a former labor union lawyer, I can't be a scab of any kind. I defer to my fellow SCC'ers who have claimed or been granted the mantle of authority.

So, being new to this process, what does it mean that there were very few "big cities" on this cert? Welcome to the Board and the Second Certers or Beyond Club badgerfan. We are happy you have joined us. No we do not haze new members, although it might be a consideration in the future. As to the lack of "big cities" on the cert this is the usual practice. According to the Union contract with sitting ALJs, they are to be offered the chance to transfer to other locations (if they have been an ALJ for more than 90 days) based upon the time of request for the transfer determining who acquires the open slots (each ALJ is allowed to list 5 transfer locations). So, SSA asks those ALJs who are on the transfer list if they would wish to take one of the cities on their list prior to offering the location to newbie ALJs. Hence, most large cities are on sitting ALJs lists for transfer and they gobble up those openings leaving the rest for the newbie ALJs to fight over on certs. Hence, you are not likely to see many "big cities" on too many certs. It does occasionally happen, but not often. Usually it is Crapland locations that have openings for certs. I hope this helps you.

Many of us have been there, done that already.

Thanks Moopigsdad. I figured that, but it is nice to have confirmation. I am just curious what cities would be on the second cert, if the bigger cities are filled by transfers, and the first group will fill these somewhat smaller cities, what cities would be on a second cert (assuming there is one). I am assuming that would be cities that are anticipating retirements, but cannot post openings until people actually retire?

I am assuming that would be cities that are anticipating retirements, but cannot post openings until people actually retire? A lot of the same cities are likely to be on the cert again, like Mt. Pleasant, MI and Toledo, OH to name a few because people always want to transfer out of those locations and because there are more openings for ALJs than this cert will fill. Mt. Pleasant only has five ALJs right now, but room for twelve. SSA is not going to hire seven ALJs for Mt. Pleasant this time around. I figure they may hire three at the most. So, expect to see about 50% of the same cities again, if not more, with some other locations in other regions not on this present cert.

You can see hits and some misses. aljdiscussion.proboards.com/thread/2488/popular-cities

Depending on the number of hires per office on this cert, a lot of these same cities could very well reappear on the second cert. The bulk of the cities looking to fill spots will usually be small towns in the Rust Belt or Deep South. Or perhaps NHC hiring will be all the rage in the second cert.

In short, badger, the cities appearing on any certificate are based upon the greatest perceived need at the time the certificate is generated. Welcome to SCOB.

I'm in for the club, but wouldn't hazing (much less "hell week") be redundant, given the events of the last 14 months? Parties, on the other hand, are certainly welcome!
