Yes, the conference call did say 200 new judges by the end of the year. I generally don't like to report what I hear on those calls, as the speaker might consider the remarks confidential. However, I wouldn't think this news is confidential, especially as the Commissioner has made a public statement about it. Now is a very good time to be on the register with a score high enough to be referred to the agency. Sklar was pretty clear today that we should share today's info with staff and put no limits of any kind on the information. Otherwise I would not have divulged anything confidential for management ears only. No way! I like my job, and I don't intend to betray confidence for any reason.

Medicare is dealing with incredible, system-crushing, delays in adjudicating its cases, yet Funky reported some time ago that OMHA will be hiring only 7 new ALJ's this year. Why aren't the people at OMHA (all of whom seem to have been of high rank at ODAR a few years ago) planning a similar large hire?

All the ups and downs make me think of a golf t-shirt analogy:
I hate this game. I hate this game. Nice shot! I love this game!

Also I think the report from Funky was that they were hiring 7 ALJs off the register not necessarily only 7 ALJs. They have also requested applicants from the pool of sitting ALJs.

Do we know how many folks are being hired from the current cert? I recall 90 being the number and that training would take place in September and October. That would require training in November and December unless they hire the folks in December time frame and have them report to training in January. 110 more judges would need to be hired this calendar year. SSA nearly invariably works on a fiscal year basis, from October 1 through September 30, and not on a calendar year basis. Whatever ALJ hiring goals have been announced, accordingly, likely relate to the pre-October 1 period.

I wonder if I should unsuspend myself from the register and ask for a VTC interview with SSA.

When can we expect news of the second cert? Do we have to wait until offers are accepted from this cert?

When can we expect news of the second cert? Do we have to wait until offers are accepted from this cert? Theoretically, no. But I don't see them doing a second round of certs until they've done their hiring from the first round of certs.

If SSA asked for a second round prior to finishing the offers for the first round, you would see a lot of the exact same people taking up the top three slots on the certificates. Not that I have any inside knowledge on the process (other than the knowledge of how registers work). But it seems to me that in order to reach more potential candidates, SSA would want folks who accept offers in the first round to be off the register.

I'm sure I'm not the only one anxious for the second cert! I too am anxious for them to do the second round of certs, hoping they'll include my locations and score. But I expect they'll want the new lists of eligibles to exclude the people they've hired and three-struck on the first round, and that can't happen until the first round hiring has taken place.

I don't know that it would change the number of candidates they could ultimately reach, but it would be a lot messier.

Now if they will just put one or two (or more!) of my cities on a cert, I would have a shot! Where is the "double-like" button!?!?

Wouldn't the following inform you that you've been three struck? 1: You've been on at least three prior certs (the new version of a cert per location). 2: The new cert includes locations on your GAL. 3: Your score is high enough to be on the cert for at least one of those locations. 4: You are not on the cert.

They are not going to hire more than what they have on the current certs before 10/1. That said, I'm sure they want to get slots filled as soon as possible, so by the end of the calendar year for another group makes sense.
I would not expect a second set of certs until offers are made for the current ones and they see where everything ends up.
