I'm having a hard time empathizing on this one. I can fully understand those that would be taking a pay cut to take the job not wanting to do that. I took a nice cut myself when I left private practice for a writer job with odar. It was tough. But the benefits and lifestyle more than made up for it. Now, after a promotion to senior and five years of WIGI, I am just south of the middle of gs13. In the ROU locality pay band. If I get this gig and stay in ROU, it will be a 30k raise. Wow. But even if it wasnt much of a raise or even a small cut it would be worth it. I mean, you get about a 9k raise every year for the first 3. And that first year is essentially two months of training and then working a few momths on a learning curve. By year 7 my salary would be almost double what it is now... If you feel entitled to start at alj 3B, by all means ask. But dont shoot yourself in the foot over a temporary inconvenience. Actually, there's a whole group of us hoping several of you do shoot yourselves in the foot. Please, demand more money, the corner office, your own Keurig coffee machine, and a private car service. Go for it!!!

And you're getting less than the package a hire at the ALJ level is entitled to if your oval office doesn't open onto a rose garden.

So ... not that it will matter re: accepting an offer, but please help this complete newbie outsider understand. I have no experience with federal "locality pay." Assume no prior federal service and no bump from AL-3/A base for any other reason. It appears that everyone qualifies for locality pay at the "Rest of US" rate at least. Correct?
The base rate is $104,900.00 (Executive Order 13655, Sec. 6 and Schedule 10 (applicable 1/1/14)) and the locality-based comparability payment for "Rest of US" is at 14.16% (Schedule 9). Does that mean that all newly-appointed ALJ's will be offered at not less than $119,754 per annum (104,900 + $14,854) (consistent with the "2014 Locality Rates of Pay - Administrative Law Judges" table I found somewhere online)?
As I said, it won't matter for accepting an offer. It's a raise either way and it's about more than the money. But it'd be nice to confirm the number. :-)

Best of luck. This can be a great opportunity for many. Just be sure that, despite all the excitement of the grueling hiring process, this offer is the right opportunity for you. This is one of the best posts about the pros and cons of becoming an ALJ that I have seen in a while. The job is a great job, but it does have its tradeoffs as bikeboy noted, and it's not going to be a good fit for everyone. So for those of you who got this far, have fun this Independence Day weekend, and take sometime to reflect on your next steps. Enjoy the calm before the storm, and the next and final stage of this round will be here before you know it.

Many thanks to bikeboy and specifically the paragraph directed to GS-15 litigating attorneys ("My prior post/advice is mainly for that group of GS-15s who are highly likely to get offers..."). Awesome, that's me --and your insight was very much appreciated. Questions about pay are so appropriate and now is the time to ask and consider them! Many have families to support, possible relocation costs, potentially 2 mortgages for a while, etc. You don't want to exhaust yourself with too many "what if's" but you have to formulate some outline of a plan. Kudos to everyone who contributed on this topic. Have a great holiday weekend everyone - you deserve a break.

Bikeboy's advice about making copies of all important documents is solid. If you are a veteran who made a deposit toward civilian retirement based on your military service, I would highly recommend holding onto or obtaining documents that not only prove you made the payment, but that show how the amount was calculated. Also, if you will be moving from one agency to another, it will take some time for your leave record to catch up to you. If you can arrange to obtain your final leave and earnings statement - which won't come out until after you leave - you should do so. I was able to provide these documents when I became an ALJ and that made my life easier. My agency was willing to accept an LES as evidence of my leave balance in advance of receiving my leave record after my transfer. Maybe someone else can comment on whether SSA will accept an LES as evidence of someone's leave balance.
