In an email to all ALJ's:
Just wanted to give everyone a quick update on ALJ Hiring. We are hoping to hire 45-90 judges to come on board in August/September of this year. We have obtained certificates from OPM, completed background checks, and conducted interviews. Selections and offers will begin this month and continue for the next several weeks. Once we complete this round of hiring, we will start the process all over again for judges who will on-board in FY 2015.

I would suspect it will be far closer to 90 than 45, but hiring short of 90 was always a possibility.

I agree that the total will be very close to 90 as opposed to 45. However, I could see them hiring somewhere between 80 to 90 depending upon the ODAR openings after further transfers and the quality of the candidates after the interviews and background checks. If less than 90 are hired, it just means that SSA is likely to hire more next time to come close to the 200 number they want by the end of the calendar year. Thank you aljsouth for sharing the post.

My guess:
It is gonna be very close to 90. I think OCALJ's remark of 45 to 90 is in reference to the fiscal year. The first class of 45 will definitely start this fiscal. But, based on the training sched that has been disclosed on here, it is entirely possible that any small hiccup or delay could bump the second group of 45's start date into next fiscal. Still means close to 90 from the first cert.
The two comments I find more interesting is the added confirmation that offers will take "several weeks" and the point about then moving fast for a second round for next fiscal. That last one has to be music to our scooby contingent's ears. The first, about the several weeks to roll out offers, well...that may give Ace a coronary.

that may give Ace a coronary. Even though I may have casually tossed out "the waiting is literally killing me" - and heck, that may even be true, I don't want the board to worry unnecessarily. I'm sure this is another example of Ace engaging in "hyperbole" (whatever that is.) Marathon not a sprint, and whatnot.

I think it takes at most 15 days to get the hiring calls done. I think high scorers will get calls first. I hope that the 2nd cert drops by August 1 but I am not sure I am ready to hold my breath.

So does the single response to the new poll mean that someone already received and accepted an offer from SSA? If that is the case, congratulations No. 1!!! I have not seen any other reference to SSA offers going out already.

I have not seen any other reference to SSA offers going out already. I think someone didn't read the directions. While the offers theoretically could take weeks, like Gaidin, I don't think they will.

I'm still very interested in seeing how many hires are made. My guess is 85-90, but I'm not going to be completely floored (although I would be mildly surprised) if it's down around the 80 range for reasons I've stated before.
I agree with gaidin and observer that hires should be wrapped up by the end of the month. If you assume that 80% of offerees will accept on the spot, then that leaves 18 of 90 potential offerees taking the day to think about it. I don't think they'll give more than 24 hours to make a decision.

Debbie I think that generally, lawyers parse their words and try to speak with specificity and precision when disseminating official information. Therefore, I wonder why Debbie said "45". Why? ?? We have information that supports Debbie saying "90", but why would she superfluously say "45"? Debbie could have said 60 or 80 or 85 or any other number. Why "45"?

I'm glad (sort of) to see the statement that the offers could take several weeks. So when the first offers come out, I can still hang on to my sanity for a while waiting for the call from Bob.

At the risk of being a co-enabler for your paranoia - I thought the same thing, as well, initially. But, I figure numbers have been tossed around and lawyer-parsing (heck, we've all done it with inexact numbers) - and she may have just grabbed on the rough number of locations as a floor. In any event, to assauge what anxiety this may have caused - let's not worry about it unless and until a 45 to 50 hire goes out (vice 80 to 90). I heard directly from her, in person, a few months back, that the number was "about 90" this year (and in hindsight, I think it is clear that meant FY 2014) and "about that number" next year (and that also appears to have meant FY 2015). A member of management recently told me that the number 200 was put out as the number of hires for "this year" - and I take that to mean calendar year. Therefore, they either want to hire 180 to 200 in the very near future or they don't. If they do, the first cert cannot be anything like 45, in my humble opinion. I would say 75 to 80 is the absolute floor - particularly after all this work and effort. The only wildcard in the equation is this new process and the seemingly small number of folks invited to FC for interviews - if they were underwhelmed by the interviews - maybe they hit the pause button - but I've seen nothing credible to indicate that - the 200 number was quoted to me after interviews were substantially completed.

I've just never been able to get past the numbers. 90 out of 160 ish seems a little high. I wouldn't be surprised to see it closer to 45.

I think this is simply her wanting to be able to deal with variables. OMHA snagging people or people saying no. There is probably some small possibility that if the right people are not available then the hiring class falls apart in terms of numbers. Remember not every candidate can be hired at every location. I don't think anybody should read this to mean they will voluntarily have fewer than 90 hires.
