Confirming I accepted an offer today from SSA for Knoxville - start 9/22 (my birthday). Call came while I am at Wrigley with my son for the first time! Good day!! (No, not a Cubs fan. But my son is a baseball fanatic. And my Dad was a Die Hard. Maybe he had SSA wait until I was at his shrine ...) Congratulations! At least the call didn't interrupt a major league ball game.

well, at least he wasn't at a White Sox game. If you're going to see a game in Chi town, go to a cubs game!

Broadcaster said the Canadian Drinking Team is at Wrigley today. Does anybody know if Harry holds dual citizenship?

ok, we have cracked the code to getting a call from Bob. Make sure u are doing something fun and not work related for the next several weeks. Cubs games, trips to the beach, the drink of the day, all cut it. Good luck!!!!

And isn't it great to be at the pinnacle of Fatherhood and Career all in one glorious Chicago afternoon?!! Heck, I'm going to be grinning for a while now. BTW, isn't "way to go, Harry!" a movie or small screen line? Help me as its nagging me now...

I'm in no position to be a baseball snob--I'm a lifelong Cubs fan. My condolences, Gary. I have family members afflicted with the same condition. Trying to show some empathy, I've previously shared the following song with them, but I'd wager you already know (and take to heart)...A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request, by the late, great Steve Goodman.

BTW, isn't "way to go, Harry!" a movie or small screen line? Help me as its nagging me now... It was a glorious day. A surprisingly good game (Cub pitcher Jake Arrieta perfect thru 5 2/3 and finished with a Cub win, 3 - 1, so the home crowd was dancing! We joined in.) It was a great day. My son told me on the way home that it was the best day of baseball he has had (he's had many) between the game, the Wrigley experience and history and all the happenings at the trade deadline. That pretty much tied the SSA call as the highlight of the day for me. Thanks for the good wishes from all. This board has been a very valuable (and sometimes frustrating) resource for this "lurker." Congrats to all those who have received offers and good luck to all those still waiting. To the latter group, take heart - as of yesterday I had concluded that my chance had run out for this cert. Keep the faith.

I received an offer for a particular city. But, due to a family illness, I was unable to accept the offer for that particular city, as that city simply didn't have the medical facilities needed.
I've heard that if you don't accept an offer, you won't get another one, even though the literature from OPM says you can decline one offer.
Does anyone know if there is any truth to that?

Sorry for the health issue, and sorry that you couldn't take the offer. Did you know about the medical issue when you got notice that you were on the cert(s)? If you did, you should have removed from your GAL any city that didn't have what was needed in terms of medical facilities. If not, it's understandable, of course, and more bad luck . You should be prepared to do that the next time you make a cert, if this is a continuing situation. OPM should put you on any subsequent cert they consider you eligible for. If ODAR really wants you, and you explained why you could not take the offer, you may well get another chance. I'm sure there are others with some direct experience in this area that can comment on this.

I mentioned to Bob that, regrettably, I couldn't accept due to family issues, but I didn't go into any detail regarding medical problems. Bob was very understanding, courteous, and cordial, and he said one could still be considered for a city even if you turn down a city. I hope he is right.
I've of course heard others say though that once you turn down a city, you won't be offered another one. While that would conflict with OPM literature of being able to turn down a city, its still a strong rumor. I pray that rumor is false. But, if anyone has info. on that, I'd be interested in hearing it.

During the application process we were told:
"The ALJ register is used as the source of names to make referrals to agencies for employment consideration when they have entry level ALJ vacancies to fill. Names are referred in descending numerical score order, based on the duty location of the position(s) to be filled and the geographical preference of candidates. It is the responsibility of the hiring agency to make selections from the list of candidates referred for employment consideration from among the highest three available names, taking into consideration veterans' preference rules regarding order of selection.
NOTE: If you decline two (2) job offers, your name will be suspended from the ALJ register for a period of one (1) year or until the register is terminated, whichever occurs first. Further, as noted in the Geographic Availability section, if you decline consideration for a geographical location for which you previously indicated availability, you will no longer be considered for that location and will not be allowed to reinstate that location until the next vacancy announcement open period."
So I'm thinking that this is at least part of what people are talking about. I have no clue about the internal workings of the SSA hiring process, but feel fairly confident that if you are on another certificate for a different geo location and you are one of the top three candidates...you must still be considered for that location. Unfortunately, the way that the certificates are being done know it is possible that you would be forced to turn down two offers, which would result in suspension from the register for one year.
