When I drink gin it always tastes like I'm drinking a Christmas tree. I always think aftershave. But, I will try anything 47 times. Kinda stupid like that. As an ALJ you won't need to drink aftershave any more; you'll be able to step it up to cologne.

Many are still waiting to hear from Bob, so today's Drink of the Day is a shout out to the Man of the Moment:
1 1/2 oz Scotch whisky 1 oz Grand Marnier® orange liqueur 1 oz lemon juice 1 tsp grenadine syrup
In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine all of the ingredients. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Repeat as necessary.

I think most ALJ drinks start with an Everclear base. Then just add whatever .... especially after a full day of hearings.

Someone asked for a kool-ade based drink of the day. I recommend the Shake Em Up. Take a bottle of Everclear, add a packet of sweetened kool-ade. Replace cap. Shake until mixed. Best not to share with the kids.

Mamaru, I can definitely see some people trying that; simple and easy-to-make, and guaranteed to give a buzz. And, after all, this is Friday.

I've been suspicious of Kool Ade based drinks since Jim Jones's Guyana adventure.

I think the original reference to drinking Kool-Ade had more to do with Jim Jones than happy hour.

A Drink of the Day with Everclear? Of course! But this DotD requires advance planning and a lot of patience! (Sound familiar?!) Today's Drink of the Day is Limoncello:
The six-week version:
2 750-ml bottles Everclear (75% alcohol by volume) 14 lemons 1.5 liters water 2 1/3 pounds sugar
Peel the lemons, yellow part only (no pith). Place the peels in a large glass jar with the Everclear, seal tight and let rest for two weeks in a dark cabinet, basement or a cellar. Do not leave it exposed to sunlight and try to resist the temptation of opening your jar and sniffing it.
After two weeks, remove the lemon peels from the jar. Heat the water and sugar in a pan, and then let cool. Add the cooled simple syrup to the jar and let the jar rest for a month. If you notice some sugar depositing in the bottom of the jar, shake it gently. Again, keep out of sunlight. After a month you can divide it into smaller bottles that you can freeze and/or share with friends.
The five-day version (from Giada De Laurentiis):
10 lemons 1 750-ml bottle vodka 3 1/2 cups water 2 1/2 cups sugar
Using a vegetable peeler, remove the peel from the lemons in long strips (reserve the lemons for another use). Using a small sharp knife, trim away the white pith from the lemon peels; discard the pith. Place the lemon peels in a 2-quart pitcher. Pour the vodka over the peels and cover with plastic wrap. Steep the lemon peels in the vodka for 4 days at room temperature.
Stir the water and sugar in a large saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Cool completely. Pour the sugar syrup over the vodka mixture. Cover and let stand at room temperature overnight. Strain the limoncello through a mesh strainer. Discard the peels. Transfer the limoncello to bottles. Seal the bottles and refrigerate until cold, at least 4 hours and up to 1 month.

I think the original reference to drinking Kool-Ade had more to do with Jim Jones than happy hour. I didn't make that connection in this post, but it definately gave me a good laugh!

OK so what is the rule about ALJs not having a side business? I'm a decent DUI lawyer; I think I could put my kids through school on you guys. Do you really think anyone drinking along would be able to open a car door?

If I weren't so obsessed with all things ALJ, I'd be thinking about my upcoming vacation. Today's Drink of the Day takes me back to last year's vacation, which I had to leave for a 2-day visit to DC. Ah, good times. Our vacation special was the Sandbridge Cooler:
2 oz. UV Lemonade Vodka Cranberry Juice Lime
Poor vodka over ice, fill glass with cranberry juice, and finish with a squeeze of lime. Serve, and raise a toast to the people who love you whether you get the job or not. Repeat as necessary.

Hopefully everyone is enjoying the weekend break from watching the polls and waiting for the phone to ring. Try to remember that this is only the first of two big hires, and if you don't make it this time, your chances next time are super great. With that, today's Drink of the Day is No Worries:
2 oz brandy 4 oz Dr. Pepper® soda
Pour the brandy over ice in an old-fashioned glass. Add Dr. Pepper, take a deep breath, and serve. Repeat as necessary.
It's all good, people.

Without this board many of us wouldn't be on this cert, much less this register. So today's Drink of the Day is for ALJD, who has given us not only a place to obtain information, but also a place to cheer and be cheered. ALJD, you are truly the Bee's Knees: 2 oz. London dry gin 1/2 oz honey syrup* 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice Combine all ingredients into a shaker. Add cracked ice, shake well and strain in a chilled cocktail glass. Raise a toast to ALJD, and serve. Repeat as necessary. * Similar to simple syrup, honey syrup is 2-to-1 honey-to-water.

Tomorrow's drink should be in honor of Pixie...we owe her a lot of thanks as well.
