So, my family and I have been in our current city a little less than two years and are currently renting a house. Our lease expires at the end of August, and I am supposed to let the landlord know whether we are going to renew or terminate our lease by 7/31. I am a first certer still waiting to hear from Bob one way or the other. Thoughts on whether I should reach out to Bob, explain my situation, and ask if he can give me any information (like at least let me know whether I've been three struck/not recommended and am out at this point)?
I know it's a marathon, not a sprint and all that, and I know this is only one of many, many things that is up in the air as a result of this selection process. However, this particular thing has a pretty tight time limit by which it must be resolved. We very much want to stay in this house for probably six more months (and then buy) if we are staying in this city (which is not on the cert), but I don't want to renew the lease and then be stuck with paying for it if I do get the call. I also, obviously, don't want to rock the boat with Bob unnecessarily or distract him from his slow march through the offers. There's a possibility we can go month-to-month for a couple of months, but it's crazy expensive to do that, so I'd really prefer to do it for at most one month. I'm also thinking of trying to explain the situation to the landlord and buy another week or two for the notification, but I wanted to get your thoughts on reaching out to Bob as well. Thanks for any insight!

I am in a similar boat. I have to pay school tuition at the end of this week. If I receive an offer, I have to figure out very quickly school districts or, at least, neighborhoods. That being said, I think the better course is not to inquire. You run the risk of the easy answer: OK, if it is a problem, I won't call you. We need to endure and ask bag lady for cheaper drinks -- no banana liqueurs and such.

For everyone in this boat, I'd say the landlord, school office, etc. would give you better feedback about your current situation than calling Bob and asking about if he could make a decision about your job prospects today or tomorrow. Rational folks would probably give you until close of business on Friday instead of Thursday - as long as they are aware of the situation you are in.
Now, if you have managed to burn every bridge with the landlord, the school, etc. already, then I guess you wouldn't get any breaks this week! Seriously, if you have made it this far in the ALJ process, I will assume you are a good tenant, good parent, but mostly a good lawyer - talk your way into a 24 hour extension.
I feel that calling Bob is tempting fate - it's like bad karma to me. Also, what if the city you are currently #4 in line for was not on Bob's list of cities to fill this week? So, not only do you not know if # 1, 2, or 3 will be removed from your city list, thereby getting you in the running, but you don't know when Bob will get to your city. Heck, he might not know either, since each city completed produces a ripple-effect to the next few cities down the list.
Tough situation, but I don't think calling Bob is going to alleviate your pain.

I have a similar issue. Maybe you could extend for one month with the option of extending to make it to your six months if necessary, if you give notice within a certain time? You would save the ll the money of having to getting the house ready for new renters for a while. Good luck!

It's a moot point! Putting that out into the universe apparently inspired Bob to call me just now! I'm gonna go vote in the polls.

I second the idea of working with the landlord, etc. I don't think asking Bob for the info you are looking for wild be a good idea. As far as school tuition, you have to go on with your life. If they will give you a little extension, great. Otherwise pay it now.
EDIT- congratulations, bulldog!

So now Bob is calling again...no email. Yep. I got a call, and he said I'll get a follow-up email with the details.
