Varies greatly by office. Some places you'll see suits at least Monday - Thursday and other places jeans and polo style shirts rule. Keep a robe handy. The day you think you'll come in for a few hours and slide in wearing jeans and t-shirt, something will come up and you need to cover some hearings. keep a robe handy - does this imply that ALJs wear their robes during the commute from home and work? Don't they have a hanger in your office or should newbies bring that with them on the first day? Way late following up. I do a lot of out-of-town hearings in person. My robe is about as likely to be hanging in my closet as it is to be at the office.

I saw that some companies make robes that are better suited for travel than others. Since you travel so much, have you considered one of those robes, or is it not worth the expense?

Most of my hearings are on the road. I bought a Harbro robe because it is machine washable and light weight. Also, I am cheap . . . I mean frugal and I think it cost a buck and change. Don't get the $10 "carrying case." The "case" is a bag like what you would get for free if you bought a suit.

Polo shirts and button downs are primary attire for male ALJ's and occasional Hawaiiian shirt for non-heariing days. I keep an extra button-down handy for the occasional need such as TPTB arrive or coffee/meal spillage or to replace another judge at the last minute when I did not plan on it. Robes are custom here so a button down is for hearing and pants can be jeans, khakis or whatever is comfortable but appropriate. You are only seen from chest up given the dais and the robe.
