This article certainly would seem to support a finding that becoming an IJ would be challenging.

Challenging Jesse? Depressing is more like it. And ODAR ALJs think they are treated badly? I hear similar themes on this board about the lack of respect and the inane goals that need to be met, but I wonder if being an ODAR ALJ is as bad as being an IJ. I hope not.

And I was thinking some folks would drop off the ALJ register to go be an IJ. Guess not!

Well if all these negative vibes would go away..... I hope several of you find your niche as IJs. Maybe lots of you. Don't trust all these "reports" go for it.

Having practiced in front of IJ's for a few years ... and given the recent influx of minors (and others) at the southern border, I wouldn't touch the job.
It would be much more rewarding for me personally being a private immigration practitioner rather than an IJ. And from what I have seen the first week on the new job, neither could touch being an ODAR ALJ.
The hearings I observed this week in my new office were very focused, but less intense. The staff is great and helpful, rather than playing "hide the ball."
IMHO, being an IJ would be a lot like being either a gunslinger or the town Marshal in the old West. You didn't see too many old ones.

I got one person on the register to apply for an IJ position in their hometown. Now if every scobie finds one friend on the ALJ register to leave, we are that much closer to the goal

Wouldn't you just love to be called Your Honor by government lawyers and be the only one standing between some bewildered child and deportation?

Gaidin! We're buddies, aren't we? And you'd make a terrific IJ. . . . Ah, forget it. You're too smart to fall for the old become-an-Immigration Judge-and-clear-the-path-for-me trick.

ok1956, would you like to be my friend? If you would, I can tell you about a wonderful opportunity for someone with judicial aspirations.

Sandiferhands, you know I consider you one of my closest friends on this Board. Because of this friendship, I want to share with you a wonderful opportunity I heard about on USA jobs. Evidently, DOJ is hiring more that 30 judges to hear removal cases. I think you would be perfect for it. As I understand it, these judges are needed urgently, so I don't think they have the luxury for the OPM cert process. But shhhhhh! Don't tell anyone else! We'll just keep this our little secret. Good luck!

This is getting discouraging--nobody wants to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to become an Immigration Judge. I myself would jump at the opportunity if I didn't have a disqualifying conflict of interest--my ancestors were immigrants.

The turn this thread has taken totally makes me laugh. Thanks! I will apply. I love the rejection! It will give me another hobby while waiting for the second cert. I am a glutton for punishment!!!

Does anyone know whether a candidate on the register who accepts an ALJ position at OMHA or an Immigration Judge position is automatically taken off the register, or does one later have the option of accepting an ALJ position with SSA should the opportunity arise?
