Chocolate! Although not Halloween related, my current favorite are the Magnum ice cream bars -- chocolate ice cream with raspberry swirl. They are worth their ridiculous price!

I favor dark chocolate - lately Ghiradelli's 60% chocolate chips.... yum!

Are you people trying to put me in a diabetic coma? Fascinating read from a few days ago. They bring in 150 college students. A third of the students get water, a third gets a drink sweetened with sugar, and a third gets a drink sweetened with artificial sweetener. The students are then shown a box with three things in it and told they can only take one with them when they leave. One of those things was M & M's. The students who had been fed artificial sweetener were almost three times more likely to take the candy than the students who received the sugar or the control. What? (My question was: why didn't everyone take the M & M's? I would take them just on principle....) www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/09/diet-soda-psychology_n_5785586.html

If you're in a diabetic coma you're one less to get past. 2) With the other options being a bottle of water and sugarless gum, I'm also surprised more in all groups didn't take the M & Ms. 3) Whichever group I was in, my taking the M & Ms would be dependent on whether they were plain or not.

The people who drink water don't crave sweets, and the people who drank sugary drinks already satisfied their sweet craving. I have heard that artificial sweeteners in diet sodas actually contribute to weight gain -- I don't remember why, maybe because they condition the body to always want sweets.

I have heard that artificial sweeteners in diet sodas actually contribute to weight gain -- I don't remember why, maybe because they condition the body to always want sweets. From what I remember from the long long ago (college), the body begins to produce insulin when it senses sweetness. Both the sugar water and non sugar water folks produced insulin upon drinking the fluid. Those that drank sugar water used the produced insulin to absorb the glucose into the body. Artificial sweetener is not absorbed, so those folks continued to have insulin in their bloodstream, searching for sugar. This creates the craving for sugar in those folks. Or something like that.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and glad I found it! I'll generically introduce myself with non-specific details now.... I'm a state ALJ in the Midwest. I have at least seven years of litigation experience (haha!) and the highest standards of judicial ethics (you hear that all you lurkers???).
Spouse and I are totally mobile, so I'm hoping to make my career-long aspiration of federal service a reality someday soon. I didn't go through the ALJ process that just concluded but I put in for some of the immigration judge positions that just closed.

Welcome, bikingnut! Good luck with the IJ app. With midwest and your chosen avatar name, it makes me think of the movie Breaking Away filmed in Bloomington, Indiana. I had colleagues who had a long trial out-of-state in Indiana, and I advised them to bring their bikes.

Welcome, bnut. Is that a kingfisher? I think so? Just a photo I had handy. A depiction of a recent bad hair day, actually. I sent the photo to my hair stylist and it was still on my phone.

Not sure if it's a rockhopper or macaroni. Thanks to my family's subscription to NatGeo Kids! I'm gonna say Northern Rockhopper, which is actually related to the Macaroni penguin. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockhopper_penguinAnd Rockhopper is a brand of mountain bike, so it all comes full circle with no effort on my part. Although I'm not a mountain biker--too muddy, prefer not to break my collarbone.

@ Bikingnut - I like your avatar/picture. I just started Season One of Dr. Who. I had no idea it would be as good as it is.
@ Everyone - Hi. I started as a lurker, then I started to post, then I started lurking again. I think it is time I start posting again. Someone has to represent for the Arkansas Hogs during football season! Go SEC! lol
