So, today one of our new instructors likened the new alj training to "alj camp". Couldn't let that go by without a post.
Maybe my classmates will chime in with their own impressions.
Purely my own opinion but the hotel is less than awesome. Food is generally only marginally worthy of the term. Rooms are significantly smaller than the residence inn room I stayed in for writer training in 09. And I just paid $2.50 for a pepsi. They are generous with the wine and beer but selection is limited.
Training....first off, the instructors have been top notch. Really. Not just knowledgeable but good presenters and effective teachers. I am also very impressed with my fellow students. Well, except.those losers from Milwaukee and Tupelo. Just kidding. Mostly. The Tupelo twosome have even started dressing alike....
The first week is over and, as an insider, I found it difficult to stay focused. I completely understand the need to start how they do and that everyone needs to get the basics down. But insiders will be bored, though you might be surprised and hear something you didnt know. The respiratory lecture is pretty good. So is the psych lecture. The cardiac...well, the guy cant turn you into a cardiologist in two hours. And after that two hours you will remember why you went to law school and not med.
Weathers been awesome, plenty of great places to eat and drink nearby and almost too much to do in your all too infrequent downtime.
Tough being away from family, get them to visit or plan a trip home in advance if you can.
Not much info on the second cert....but they want it to.come as much as you guys do.
Best of luck all.
Funky

The title of this thread brought to mind Allan Sherman's "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh." Thanks for the report Funkman.

Right there with you Funky. Training has been good. Cardic lecture was a bit over the top. Being an outsider I haven't been bored, but haven't been overwhelmed either. Best part has been meeting all the newbies. Free food at the hotel definitely isn't the best on the planet but there are many great options within esay walking distance. The after dinner cookies aren't bad.

Thanks for the update Funky. I am sure a psych lecture would be helpful for some of us Scobies at this point. Tupelo Twosome made me chuckle as well.
Do you guys have a kitchenette that you can cook in?

Is it like boot camp and if we send you actual US mail with hearts etc in the envelope then when you receive it, you have to do push-ups for each heart etc?!! I will start writing right now!!! I can draw lots of little hearts and smiley faces on one envelope.

I can draw lots of little hearts and smiley faces on one envelope. It's more like summer camp without the lake. But if two guys happen to wear matching shirts to class, sit next to each other on the bus, and have lunch together, they just might get publically harassed. All in good fun, of course! No bullying allowed.

"Dear Guardian of BagLady: We assigned all campers a task to make something from a bowl of lemons. We were expecting lemonade from most and creative art projects from some. We were not expecting something that would result in the total breakdown of good order and discipline throughout the camp. We are expecting that we will appreciate BagLady's artistic endeavors following next week's distribution of rye and copper piping. We hope her artwork won't be explosive. Much love, Your ALJ Camp Counselors"

Today's camp craft project: I take it you are turning lemons into an alcoholic concoction. Limoncello, my very wise friend. And because I'm a camp geek, it looks like two alcoholic concoctions . . . since I have a couple dozen naked lemons and a second bottle of vodka, I'm thinking vodka & lemonade (duh). ETA: Lemonade is so lame. But add vodka and it's really just pure brilliance. Just sayin'.

Isn't adding anything to a good vodka like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa?

Which hotel are you staying at? The party's at Residence Inn Pentagon City. No kids, no cleaning, no cooking and no laundry for a month. What's not to love?
