There are some demographics (these are ODAR only) which I recently came into possession of - and I saw no note of this information being close hold.
ALJ attritions for FY 2014 was 121 with the vast majority due to retirement but 15 due to transfer, 4 to resignation, 5 to expiration of appointment (??) and 3, sadly, to death. Folks, these are raw numbers, speculation as to causation is of course now authorized. Most ALJ losses were in Regions 4 and 9, followed by 5, 2, 3. Of those looking to question their GALs, this is useful albeit late information.
Age of ALJs - not surprisingly (at least for me) is that the largest age category are those in the 61-65 age category (284), followed closely by 66-70 (275), 56-60 (240) and 51-55 (203). I was most surprised by the edges of the bell curve... age 34-40 (50) and for age 71-75 (77) and over 76 (41) - and there are 15 ALJs over 81.
Experience level - the greatest number of ALJs fall in the 0-5 year level (690) and 6-10 year (320). (total # is 1444).
Hope this gives someone some data point of value.

usnjudge you have made my day. I love me some data. I don't suppose there is breakdown by region on how many losses by attrition per region? Perhaps even magically by office....... If you want to just dump the data here or pass along a link to the data instead of pulling it apart yourself that is cool too.

Woot Data!!!! 5 dead in Region 4 over 2 years. The next highest number is 1. I know Region 4 is huge but 5 times the number of deaths? The retirements in Regions 5 & 9 make me hopeful.

Everyone should eliminate Region 4 from their GALs when they can. I know it's a good gig but it's not a job to die for.

There is a direct correlation to the number of ALJs who have departed my 'dream' region and the number of ALJs hired in the first round of certs this year.
Did anyone else find a correlation of hires vs. departures? If not, could that region be one of the tergeted regions for the second round of certs??
I know I am speculating, but that's all we can do at this point.

I wonder too. What is expiration of appointment if we already have a death category? I can't even guess.
And 15 Judges over 81? That's impressive. My State retires their Art. III Judges at 70--to include their Art. I Judiciary.

I have a friend and former colleague who was hired in the 1st cert. Although his GAL was wide open, the only openings he was offered were in Region 5.

Sh!t. I've entered the Matrix. Funky, It's even worse than that. As one who knows the pointy end of a manning document and spent far too much time spitshining Excel spreadsheets, I believe you have actually entered... the Metrics. C

FY15 numbers are in already? Wow! I know they are just reporting to date. Hence total numbers will only continue to rise. As to deaths of ALJs, it's true when they say: "I'd die to get that job!" I guess it's best not to say that anymore.

I believe that the "expiration of appointment" category refers to a "Senior ALJ," meaning an ALJ who previously retired and was then rehired for a contracted term, whose contract is not renewed. This is the limit of my knowledge, it may refer to other scenarios as well. Good luck to everyone and congrats to our newly minted ALJ's.

Apologies if there is another thread out there more on point; but I didn't see a newer one in my search. Is there any updated data on ODAR ALJ attrition? Also, I've Googled and I can't find demographic data on the federal ALJ corps, things like age, gender, race, vet status etc. Anyone know what the demographics are on the current ALJ corps or where I can find that info?
