100 to 150 a year more or less I think re attrition? Don't know on rest of info Thanks Christina! Although age doesn't necessarily equate with retirement, I think it would be interesting to know the current age of the Corps, to see if there could be any spikes in the usual attrition rates, based on folks retiring. Even with the herd heading for the register next summer, if attrition rates significantly increase this could still require continued ALJ testing and register replenish.

Thanks for the date, usnjudge! I didn't notice any ALJs in the 41-50 age range; did I miss something? Don't know about that data spread, but there are quite a few in the 40 to 50 range. I don't know it as fact, but the more recent classes have skewed to a lower average age than in prior registers. At least it appeared that way from my class and the supplemental training I went to a year later. That doesn't mean there wasn't hiring of the AARP crowd, just seemed the average age was lower than what I had seen in my previous years with the agency. Now, with that said, hilltopper, @tigerlaw and @papajudge still technically fit on the 40 to 50 range. As long as you are talking eons and not years.

Nah, not gonna bail till after this round of offers roll out.
Now, I'm not kidding about papa, hilltopper and Tiger. I have it on good authority they were the three judge panel that ruled the applications for positions on the Ark filed by unicorns, dragons and mermaids were submitted after the deadline and summarily dismissed.

So, if attritions for FY 2014 were 121, how many ALJ's did they hire in Fiscal 2014?

luvgov, I do not have exact numbers, but there was a hire of approx. 70 in July/August 2014. The previous hiring was done in FY 13 in September 2013 (from the previous register) and then the next round of hiring wasn't until FY15.

Just woke up from my first morning nap and saw this funky post. Laughed out loud before my teeth then fell out. Bent down to pick them up but once down there forgot what I was doing down there in the first place. Didn't care because I found the TV remote I had left in my shoe under the couch a week or so ago, I think. Tried clicking on and off the TV but nothing happened except for my better half yelling something from her car outside about the garage door going up and down banging on her car. Can't understand her for all the racket going on out in the garage. Obviously another TV remote is broke. Anyway gotta get back up and start reviewing another case file of another real young fella, in his upper 50's claiming he can't work. I could probably ask Funky about this case, but first I have to go take my second morning nap. I'll just ask Hilltopper or Tiger later; they stay up pretty late, sometimes just past dinner time I can catch them online at 4:30 or so, before I call it a night.

Papa this beats the best of Comedy Central. I had to read it to my son and he agrees, you are just way funny. Thanks Oh please don't encourage him! He and I are the same age (even share the same birthdate) and I refuse to admit I'm that decrepit! LOL

there are judges in that age range although maybe that was not in cited material I have an ODAR demographics tally from 2/17/16 and it shows as follows: Age # of ALJs 35-39--43 40-44--122 45-49--190 50-54--229 55-59--256 60-64--278 65-69--252 70-74--121 75-79--20 80-84--18 85-89--5 for a total of 1,534 ALJs The 85-89 group includes 4 in Region 2, 1 in Region 6 and 1 in Region 9. There is a chart with years of experience. Males outnumber females 35 to 4 in the experience range 25-29 years, 15 to 1 in the experience range 30-34 years, and no females have 35-49 years of experience. There are a total of 540 females and 994 males in the total 1,534 for this demographic data. The highest numbers of ALJ fall into the 0-4 years of experience range with a total of 590 and the next highest level is in the 5-9 years of experience range with 465. The experience ranges of 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, and 25-29 all show considerable lower totals of 192, 105, 118, and 39, respectively. From what I have read on the internet and the blog, that makes sense. Apparently the agency had a period of not hiring or low hiring until the backlog became a concern, but SSA has increased the efforts in recent years. Hope this is helpful. Actually, a lawsuit held up the hiring from about 1998 until 2001. The Agency wanted to hire, but was unable to do so. Pixie

That was the time I actually started looking to join the am I ranks. Wasn't there another pperiod of time that only those who had already applied could be considered for open positions? They weren't accepting new applicants?

I am putting the quoted material after my content because I couldn't make it come out right the other way: That was the Azdell case. With the exception of 10-point vets, applications are not accepted except during a JOA open period. One of the consequences of Azdell's pendency was an extended time during which there was no JOA open period. Actually, a lawsuit held up the hiring from about 1998 until 2001. Just woke up from a long nap after going to my alma mater hometown - Bowling Green for some nine-pins and libations. Age is relative. I mean, if you have been basically inactive for 20 years, you don't count those years ... So with that said, I definitely would fit in the 41-50 age range (That's Less than Closely Approaching Retirement - adjusted to Younger - based on inactivity.) Rip van Hilltopper
