I agree SSA will make sure it's own needs are taken care of even if that means not abiding by a candidate's preferences.
However, I think at this point they will have enough eligibles for even the least desired location to have a top 3 regardless of the order in which they hire from these certs. Later, it may be they will not have enough and will either do as you suggest or use the dearth of crapland candidates to push for a refresh of the register, or both.

I have wondered whether they are placing the hardest places to fill on these early certs. You would think that with a potential for 250 new hires that some of the "more desirable" cities will be adding ALJs--potentially beyond those seeking/and eligible to transfer. Maybe just wishful thinking.

I agree Gary about more than enough people to even fill "crapland" locations right now, so it will depend on who they want to hire and if they want to place them in a desired location or not. For me, I would list crapland as 1-10 and the rest lower, so maybe they might hire me because I really want "crapland" locations. LOL! There must be something wrong with me.

It's one thing to limit your options for family/medical/other concerns, but I really do not think it makes sense to strike cities that you once considered acceptable on the chance that you get a finer array the next round. I think we are dreaming if we expect the "most desirable" cities to show up on a cert - ever. The only way to get to the premium locations many want is via the transfer list. By the time they get to the bottom of this register, the first certers and others who are chilling in the rust belt or isolated in West Crapland and want to get out will already be lined up to transfer to North Utopia.

Well stated mamaru. I didn't strike anything although my wife cannot leave the state we live in because of her job. I will have to live alone until I eventually transfer back to crapland.

As a caveat, SSA is on a large hiring spree - it seems to me that SSA has worked through most of the transfer list, so I anticipate that there will be a trend of cities that hadn't been on the certs before being filled. While "most desirable" is relative, a lot of previously not filled by new ALJs cities will start showing up. SSA has the money for hiring and needs to spend it - if there is an open ALJ office, it appears SSA wants to fill it. You all who are waiting for the call are in good stead - IMHO.

Nobody has shared an updated transfer list since the last shuffle. It would be fun to see it. Hint Hint. (Names redacted, of course.)
Rumor has it that a lot of the first certers are going to be on the transfer list at their earliest opportunity. Some got their first choice offices or are happier where they are now than where they came from - others are anxious to go back home.
