Back in the day, before my time really, there was a discussion board that was so infested by hateful trolls that it became nearly unusable. In response, some nice people created this fabulous forum to dispense information on the ALJ hiring process. For which, I am eternally grateful. I certainly feel that I owe my current position to the information I obtained here. We recently had a conversation where it became clear that some wanted to keep this forum limited in scope to only issues of ALJ hiring. With that in mind, it occurred to me that a forum where ALJs, lawyers, and others, could meet and discuss other topics might be useful. A place to ask questions, complain about your job if you need to, or talk about current events with smart people. Anyone with children knows that every once in a while you just have to have some grown up conversation. And so, grownupconversation.freeforums.net/ was born. The obvious problem will be keeping it troll free. As admin, I hereby pledge to aggressively play whack-a-troll at every available opportunity. We already have some members who were checking out the site for me. But now, I would like to invite everyone to take a look, start a thread, and give me any feedback you may have on the forum itself. I look forward to hearing your opinions, and reading some smart, insightful, conversation. R

I don't know that it was so much as limiting discussions to only matters of ALJ hiring, but the divisive nature of the topic under discussion. That was the reason for the thread being locked. As I said at the time, topics such as this seldom end well.
I will be interested in your new forum and will stop by and take a look at it. Good luck on developing a viable and informative board. Pix.

Pixie still exists? Wow, you've been quiet. Or I look in the wrong places.

Pixie still exists? Wow, you've been quiet. Or I look in the wrong places. I have been quiet, but now am back as I have more time to devote to the board and take some of the work off of ALJD. Probably won't be posting much but will be monitoring the board on a regular basis. Pix.

It is a pleasure to see you active again, even if not posting as much, but at least taking a bigger interest in the Board, once more.

Thank you, MooPig's Dad. Yes, I have time now to take more interest in the board and help ALJD with the moderating duties. Been easy so far.
I don't want to hijack ROBG's thread. Pix.

Feel free to hijack away!
On a similar note, though, I could probably use a co-admin/moderator as well. Now accepting applications!

Just to avoid confusion: Some may recall about three months ago I set up an alternate forum to give us the opportunity to discuss other topics. I only bring it up now because it was referenced in a now-locked thread, and I received a PM inquiring about it. I put a significant amount of work into the alternate forum, particularly trying to stimulate conversation about varying topics not related to ALJ hiring. I invited lots of people, including many very smart non-lawyers, and non-ALJs, to participate. Many joined, but sadly, said little.
I participate in several wide-ranging conversations, by Facebook, (the most tedious way to converse, to me) and by e-mail, but I was unable to convince those participants to try the forum setting. Unfortunately, after about six to eight weeks of zero activity, and I do mean zero, I decided to delete the other board. Clearly, there was a “want” for an alternate discussion place, but not a “need.” It really came down to the fact that I was spending time administering a site that was getting so little traffic that it did not seem to warrant the commitment I made to moderate it. Still, all in all, an interesting experiment.

You know what is weird rob? I just popped over there this morning to see what was up and saw the board taken down! Thanks for posting the explanation here. If we ever need it again, I hope you will volunteer to get the conversation started elsewhere. As always, your ALJ info is appreciated here, thanks!

Sorry it didn't work out for you. It would have been a good addition.
I wondered how you would as TOB doesn't get much mileage, and it has been cleaned up.
