This question is to any new ALJs (prior to this most recent cert) who were current federal employees and received certain relocation benefits. You have the option of doing a house hunting trip (prior to arrival at the new duty station) or receiving temporary quarters. Do the temporary quarters include the first 3 weeks at the duty station prior to returning to Falls Church for the 1 month training? Or does ODAR cover the hotel costs for the first 3 weeks (as if you were TDY)? My take is that the first 3 weeks fall into the temporary quarters period. But if anyone has gone through this recently, can you confirm or let me know that I am mistaken. Thank you very much. JD

I was wondering if we are supposed to be moved before our start date 22 March 2015 (as in completed a house hunting trip and found a place to live) or if the 3 weeks in the new office is partly to find time to find a place to live). I've got to get cracking.

I believe there is another fairly comprehensive thread on this topic in the last 6 months. But finding it may be problematic. Pixie.

Quick answer is the first 3 weeks are covered by the temporary quarters you elect. So if you elect lump sum payment you will use a portion of that to cover the first 3 weeks Then at training you are on per diem (separate than the TQ you elect) and won't have to use the TQ money for that

I called about 15 places today in the city I am moving to and everything was rented. I had no idea of the competition. I've lived in big cities, even D.C. but this Western city is all booked up.

Better start looking at all cities in driveable distance to the ODAR office.

I posted just as a warning to some who are planning to move that there aren't a lot of vacant spots waiting for a tenant in some areas.

Will the government cover air B&B for your first 3 weeks?

I haven't received any actual relocation information yet. The move is supposed to happen in less than a month so I am stressed.

One can always park their RV in the ODAR parking lot. And send a political message at the same time!

Will the government cover air B&B for your first 3 weeks? Yes, if you find it at the appropriate rate or take fixed lump sum.

I received an e-mail from ODAR Travel and Payroll Services, about a week after my offer phone call; the e-mail included a series of documents that I had to fill out and return; after I faxed back the forms, I got a follow-up e-mail shortly thereafter. If you haven't received anything at all from this office, not even a single e-mail or attachment, please send me a private message and I'll give you the contact info I have. They certainly should have reached out to you by now.

I emailed Bob day before yesterday because I hadn't received anything - he responded yesterday that the holiday and snow day put them behind and it would be next week.

I think mine hit the bank within a week or 10 days... definitely before the credit card bills came due!

You will probably find the first three weeks at your new office prior to training to be very busy and you may not get to do much house hunting then. On the other hand, if you contact your new office right away, you may find that some of the staff and other Judges will be more than happy to help you. Best of luck to all.
