This is an OPM rule of rather recent origin. Remember this: What OPM has given, OPM can take away. Keep the license current, or in a status that can easily be made current. Most states have special rules for judges that make it much easier to maintain a license. Many don't require CLE. Let the license lapse at your own peril. Pixie. Amen. Letting it lapse is economics without imagination or laziness. The license is simply too hard to earn in the first place to let is go. It only takes a little CLE time and money to keep that license. There are always free courses and luncheons available. You never know what circumstances may arise in a few years down the road. What if you want to change to another agency or do something different? Heck I still keep my RN license current! It is simply no risk to keep it, and the CEUs I earn for it help keep my medical knowledge current for the work at ODAR. Win win.

A former coworker of mine who had worked as a nurse before she became a lawyer recently retired from her state ALJ position after about 20 years and is working as a pre-op nurse in one of the large hospitals. She makes good money on top of a good pension, gets ridiculously cheap health insurance for herself and her college student triplets, and is enjoying it immensely. Whatever licenses one has should be kept.
