This week I heard from a variety of sources that there were going to be multiple rounds of interviews, so this first round of interviews is definitely not the only one. But, I was not able to suss out any more information on which particular courts are hiring first (only that any hiring is going to be difficult as long as DOJ has no Attorney General).

From AILA Chicago Chapter: The EOIR is in the process of interviewing applicants for vacant IJ positions. Interviewing should be completed by Summer. Is there a link for this or just "word of mouth"? In either case, thanks for the info. A link would only work if you're a member of AILA. The Chicago Chapter reported this as coming from EOIR.

This is dated info, but as far as I'm aware has only been released now:
American Immigration Lawyers Association EOIR Fall 2014 Liaison Meeting October 23, 2014 - Minutes 1. Update on Hiring Immigration Judges. Please provide a current time line for the hiring of new Immigration Judges (IJ), both permanent and temporary. At which immigration courts will the new judges be posted? EOIR Response: It usually takes 10 months to bring on an IJ. EOIR is pleased to announce that there are currently 25 full-time IJ selections in the hiring process or starting after January 2015. EOIR expects two new IJs to begin working in November 2014 – one in Salt Lake City and one in New Orleans. EOIR expects the additional 23 IJs to be working by the spring of 2015. Placement for the 23 IJs who are currently in the hiring process are as follows: 1 in New Orleans, 5 in San Francisco, 3 in Las Vegas, 3 in Newark, 3 in Houston, 2 in New York, 2 in Los Angeles, 2 in Memphis, 1 in Buffalo, and 1 in Salt Lake City. Positions for the 2015 fiscal year have not yet been identified, but EOIR hopes to announce additional hires in FY 2015. As of this date, EOIR has not hired any temporary IJs and EOIR does not have any specific information as of yet regarding where or when the temporary IJs will be hired.

Just wondering ..........does anyone have any knowledge of others getting a first interview (or second)? Also, any opinion on a correlation between lack of hiring activity and lack of progress on confirming a new AG?

IMHO the fact that the AG's nomination is not moving forward is a huge factor. The Deputy AG's are the ones who have to sign off on most hiring decisions, and the majority of those people have moved on and not been replaced (and won't be until the agency gets an AG). This article lays it all out: www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/in-the-loop/wp/2015/01/14/the-justice-department-seems-to-be-in-home-alone-mode-a-bit-earlier-than-usual/I have not heard about any further rounds of interviews (and I know a number of people who should definitely at least get an interview if OCIJ moves forward on hiring for their cities). Nor have I heard of any hires from the first round of interviews (but any hires would have to be approved by a Deputy AG and there is none in charge of EOIR right now, apparently). I heard rumors that the primary cities being considered in that first round were Houston and San Francisco, but that is speculation. For those who have not gotten a call, "no news is good news," and there is still plenty of reason to hope you are in the running.

I was contacted for an interview. It is one panel interview for all positions for which I applied.

For what it's worth, one of my cities is on the list that tpm posted, and that application is the one that converted to "Complete" sometime around early February. I have no idea whether any of that relates to the interview timing, and I did not ask about particular openings.

For those who have applied for the immigration judge positions Do any of you have "Pending HR specialist action" in your status?

About half of my applications show "pending HR specialist action" in status, and the other half show "complete." However, of the cities that I applied for, three appear on the AILA list that tpm provided (SF, NY, Newark), and all 3 of those are marked "complete." I really have no idea if that means anything. Good luck to all!

If you are selected for an interview, they provide a form for you to fill out and rate the locations that you applied for in order of preference. The form says that your order is only meant as an attempt to accommodate your preferences and will not affect your chance for selection. I interpret that to mean that they offer people in an "order of merit" style selection process such that the top overall candidate can (essentially) pick anywhere with an opening for which he/she applied, and so on. They also reiterate that no relocation expenses will be authorized.

With a newly appointed AJ, does anyone think the rest of the IJ positions will now be filled?

With a newly appointed AJ, does anyone think the rest of the IJ positions will now be filled? They were very circumspect about how many positions would be filled and where, largely, I suspect, because they don't know. They did say that there is at least one more interview panel after the first one if the candidate is selected to move on. No real timetable given either.

Has anyone heard anything? Hey, everyone--I'm still out here, BTW. The good news? 3 day weekend with good weather for cycling starts at the end of the work day. The non-news? No, I haven't heard anything.

I have heard of some hires, to start in June (I only know of one personally...not me, though). But, I'm pretty sure they are not done hiring yet. The ALJ and IJ processes both have their inexplicable and excruciatingly slow aspects ... so I constantly remind myself just to have patience and be "zen." Whatever happens, happens... whatever doesn't, doesn't.
