OK. Time for some idle speculation while we await the new cities list (which I believe is coming sometime this week ... just my WAG). From Judge Bice to the union and everyone in between it is reported ODAR will hire 250 ALJ'S this fiscal year. But, the first two classes totaled 90. If they continue this pattern and hire 45 per class for May, July and September, that only gets them to 225 this fiscal year. So, will they increase the class size to, say 50 for the next three classes, and get to 240? Or will they try to squeeze in a fourth smaller class one month to get to 250? Or will they hire 225 for the fiscal year and call it a day?

All we can do is sit and wait to see where SSA goes in this process. All we know is that the Chief ALJ talked about the hire of 250 new ALJs, but does that translate into exactly 250 new ALJs (more or less) nobody knows by the powers that be.

I think closer to 250 that 225. There were a few hiccups for the March class. They had several people ask to move to the May class. I believe they had at least one person accept and then turn down the offer. There were weather delays.
I also think based solely and without any real evidence that they didn't open enough certs to get as many people as they wanted. My theory is somebody at the Puzzle Palace wishes they had pulled 10 or 12 extra cities not 7.
If its any consolation I don't think they stop hiring on September 30. I think they will roll right on into the next fiscal.

Just passing on this from the AALJ newsletter received this afternoon:
9. The Agency will hire 250 new judges this year, 250 next year; we are losing 120 per year. Current capacity is 1564.
Also, new offices in the works...
1. The Agency is establishing a four-judge Chicago Loop satellite office to be administratively managed by Orland Park.
7. The current Brooklyn hearing office will move to Manhattan but there will be a satellite office established in Brooklyn as well

So is this comes to fruition, ODAR will take 590 off the register by the end of FY 2016. Add in whatever hires Medicare takes in their expansion (though they will probably cannibalize a fair number of sitting ODAR judges)and you got a register that is getting close to depletion. What did we guesstimate? 700-900 on the register, many with impossible GALs? I am sure those waiting on appeals and/or a refresh should be happy

But why would they structure it this way, instead of just adding to the Chicago office. May avoid working the transfer list, but it does not make sense to this outsider. Not saying it is wrong. I just don't understand why they would structure it this way.

What I wonder about is why manage it from Orland Park when they already have two offices (an ODAR and an NHC) in Chicago's Loop.

My guess is that the are trying to maximize office spaces and existing resources. Same thing is happening with the Valparaiso office. I was told by another source they are going to use the Gary facility as a satellite for 4 new Judges by midsummer. Awesome news, however they figure it.

I wish they would let us know that when selecting offices. Gary would have been in my GAL if offered. Oh well. They should open GAL if they are adding new sites.

Gary would be in my GAL as well. If I knew then what I know now, I would have included every available location on my GAL, then made narrowing decisions once certs emails came along. So much changes during the life of a register while awaiting an offer - first, personally (think of all the family changes in two years plus - it is a long time!), and now second, with the agencies (new offices!). You can always decline a location once you get the cert email. It is more real then, closer in time to a potential offer, and I think easier to evaluate your personal and professional situation (otherwise seems a little like consulting the Magic 8 Ball years out...). But you cannot add unless there is a refresh. I just didn't understand that well enough when I applied. Hope that helps someone on the next register.

I believe Gary is a location we did not have the opportunity to choose two years ago. If they wind up hiring off the register for it, how will they handle the GAL problem it presents? Will we all be allowed to add Gary if we wish?

If you didn't have Phx, then N. Phx office wouldn't be there etc.
