Why is that dog's rear end hanging out of his pants??? My kitties are upset. One of my classmates started off at the top of the salary table because he came over from another Agency... and then he griped when he didn't get an annual increase with the rest of us...

Disclosure: I was not authorized to assign an image to batdog's name. The image was for entertainment purposes only. Any injury which may result from the image and its likeness to any actual persons--or their 4 legged companions--participating within the ALJ Forum is simply a coincidence and I accept no liability.

First, sorry for the typos ... I cringed right after I hit send, saw them and realized there are no take-backs on here.
Second, who hacked my computer and stole the picture of my dog? Actually, "Batdog" was the labeled a neighbor hung on my former dog (RIP) many years ago when we lived in base housing. It was a fairly small dog and it was supposed to have cropped ears, but we never got them done. Because of her perpetually perky ears that were significantly out of proportion to the size of her body, my neighbor dubbed her "Batdog" and "Donkeydog." Donkeydog just didn't have much of a ring to it, so Batdog stuck ... and now I've borrowed it.
Third, I do not have an official written offer, just a verbal one over the phone, so I will hold off on IDing the organization. Once it's official I will.
Finally, thanks for the info on how pay is calculated. From what I read, it appears whether prior federal service at a higher grade warrants something other than normal entry-level ALJ pay is at the discretion of the hiring organization ... right?
Finally, finally ... I appreciate this board being around. As I'm sure all of you know, official information on the whole ALJ process is, to be charitable, less than optimal. The info on here is very helpful.

Again good luck and congrats to you!!!

Batdog, IIRC, my buddy had to request the higher level of pay when he was accepted in order to get it. It wasn't automatic. My black cat Angel was sitting onmy lap and saw the pic of Batdog and said if i tried that to her she would scratch my eyes out to start with.. My Kitties are so high maintenance. Anotehr Judge had gotten a rescue kitty from a local Agency a few months back and it had adjusted very well to the family. She talked to her partner and they decided to get another kitty for the new one to play with. They talked to her about it and she walked over and peed in the clean clothes basket, the first time she has ever done that. So much for the new kitty...

Batdog:
Congrats on accepting the position.
Being retired military often does count. Most importantly, you did something worthwhile. That beats the s**t out of many other possibilities, and I'm sure it was meaningful and generally enjoyable. That was my experience, anyway.
If you are retired active-duty, and already drawing military retired pay, you can likely get credit towards your Service Computation Date for any deployments--say, to Bosnia or to The Desert. You just need to provide your HR department with proof of that overseas service, and it might count. Think DD Form 214, deployment orders, or a citation you may have received for the needed documentation. Backing up your SCD doesn't count for pay or towards retirement, but would mean that you qualify for six hours of annual leave per pay period sooner than the usual three years. I got 11-1/2 months' credit, and am very thankful I looked into that.
If you are a "gray area" retired Reservist or Guardsman (I am not, so I'm not speaking from personal knowledge here), such that you have not yet begun receiving your retired pay, I understand you can somehow buy back your military time and get it credited toward a FERS retirement. Another possibility is that the 20 years you spent as a Reservist or Guardsman could be credited toward your SCD. That might (1) be more lucrative in the long run, and (2) could immediately enable you to qualify for eight hours of annual leave per pay period...so be sure to explore these possibilities.
Finally, if you are currently a federal civilian employee (and I was not when I was hired by ODAR), they apparently match your current federal civilian pay when you're hired as an ALJ. This happened to two friends of mine in the most recent hires. Their ALJ pay is the same as mine, and I have about three years on them in this position. One of my friends won't even hold her first hearing until next week!
So, some of these possibilities might be worth looking into. Congrats, and welcome to the ALJ Corps.
Aim High! Best, Hamster (USAF Ret.)

Hamster,
Thanks ... and I appreciate the information. I was active duty Air Force my entire career and then spent a little over a year in the federal government after I retired from the military. I've been doing some other things that do not involve the active practice of law the last few years. While I've enjoyed doing some things other than traditional lawyering, I look forward to getting back into doing real legal work for a living. I've only met a couple of the ALJs in the office I'm joining, but they seem like a good group and I am very pleased to be joining them.
