Thank you as usual for your wizardry with the transfer lists and polls Gaidin. Really wishing I had a reason to make some polls right now MPD. It was nice to see the list getting shorter.

Yes and no Gaidin. The popular locations for transfer into like Florida, Arizona, California, and other desired destinations is still large, while the lesser desired locations are now open without transfers in. Hence, it is likely to mean the next cert will still be heavy in the "crapland" locations for new offers again.

All true but I was referencing the fact that the number of ALJs seeking to transfer is down. The only silver lining about the delay in certs is that with openings in non-conforming offices in more desirable locales getting filled the odds are getting better. Additionally, some transfers we have been informed were accepted are still showing on this list. Those that have accepted but not moved is my guess.

Thanks for posting the latest transfer list. I haven't been on here in a while and decided to check it out. I also checked out the list of disability judges for my preferred office. I noticed that one of the judges appears to be gone, but I'm not sure exactly when he left.
So, my question is, do they usually try to transfer and hire in tandem or do they transfer and then hire months later (leaving an opening for a bit)? Also, I saw that there was a transfer list posted for March as well. Does anyone know when most recently a transfer list was posted prior to March and if so where I would find it? I am just trying to figure out if there is truly an opening. Thanks!

Just because there's an opening (if there is one) doesn't mean they will be in a hurry to fill it.

Also, I saw that there was a transfer list posted for March as well. Does anyone know when most recently a transfer list was posted prior to March and if so where I would find it? I am just trying to figure out if there is truly an opening. Thanks! Your question is difficult to answer because there are so many different variables. As 71stretch said, just because there is an opening, it does not mean there will be a quick hire. For example, in my office there were openings for many months with no activity, and then we received several transfers in one after another within a 2 month period. In the case of retirements, that opening cannot be filled until the opening is actually there... the retiring ALJ must actually be gone before it is considered an open spot. This is because the ALJ has the option to change his/her mind at the last minute. The same thing happens with transfers, they know there may be one coming once someone accepts, but the opening is not actually there until that person has left the office. So it does not happen in tandem.
With this mass hiring going on right now and in the upcoming year, they likely have an idea of where there will be a need based upon historical data. For instance, certain offices have a high turnover rate and they know they will come around again. But they cannot actually fill any spot until the opening is there.
Hiring happens in groups in order to fill a class. So this accounts for some of the lull between filling spots. So it is not because they "want" to have spots open, it is because of timing, budget, things of that nature. They want all the positions filled.
As to the other transfer lists, there is likely one posted here on the board somewhere but it will be of little value at this point. There are other transfers that occur like HOCALJ positions that are not on the transfer list. Also, retirements will not appear there and this is one of the common means of having an opening. The transfer list will give you an idea as to trends, but that is about it. You cannot depend upon it at all to see if there is an opening.

Forgot to mention, as to the disability judges site, that is not an accurate reflection of where an ALJ actually sits. Judges will help out other offices on occasion, and their statistics show up in different cities. So keep that in mind when you look at outside sources unrelated to SSA.

I do not think anybody posted a February list and I don't recall the last list before January. Creating additional difficulty in figuring out if an office is "full" is the fact that ODAR recently asked the offices if they had non-conforming offices they could stick ALJs in. A number of the transfers occurring now are into offices that were "full" until ODAR and the union worked out a deal about non-conforming offices.

Short answer - the transfer list is published by the judge's union and is made available to the ALJ's. It is updated monthly, as movement occurs. As noted, it is not always up to date in reflecting transfer offers that have been accepted but not effected. It has appeared here in redacted form courtesy of ALJ's willing to share and Gaidin's generosity in taking the time to sanitize it and put it in a format we can access. The original is not posted elsewhere on line for all to see.

Thanks all for your insights. I am just hypothesizing to the best of my ability. I know that a judge has left my preferred office as I confirmed his whereabouts on the disciplinary board site. The question is when/if they replace him.
Waiting is difficult.

In the current climate of identifying additional space for more judges, there probably is not a question of if, but there is a question of when. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason discernable to Board members as to the order in which slots get filled. That's not to say there isn't one, just that we haven't been able to get a handle on it.

I assume this is the list of ALJs who want to transfer and not an actual transfer.
