Haven't been here for a while, but a decision writer in our office has accepted an SSA ALJ position at an ODAR on the West Coast. EDIT: report date is 8/17/15. One of the FOADless picked out of the ether. Good luck new ALJ.

It is an acronym to describe what is more politely described a "Thanks, but not thanks" email.
A discrete population of folks from the last round of certificates have reported never having received such an email (normally used to close out a round of hiring for ODAR).

If the newly minted ALJ is a member of the Board please pm somebody what city if you don't mind.

Haven't been here for a while, but a decision writer in our office has accepted an SSA ALJ position at an ODAR on the West Coast. EDIT: report date is 8/17/15. The only problem with the named report date is that it doesn't match up with any start or training dates for SSA. Perhaps the 8/5/15 start date was pushed back to 8/17/15 for all new August starts. If this is the case, then it is clearly likely the September hires will be pushed back until a September 21, 2015 start date. Otherwise, I cannot see SSA doing training for one individual.

8/17 is also mid-pay period, which would be a rather odd time to start.

Hope raises the big question to me. Which is that its mid pay period. There was someone in the last class that was going to start a week late maybe they are allowing something similar?

Word is August 10th for a few to report to their offices but sometimes people get special permission to start a week later... so who knows.

Using my very basic knowledge of morse code, it looks like Mo has accepted an ALJ position in the Ottawa (OTT) hearing office. Congrats, Mo! I'm guessing Mo has some extenuating circumstances that allow him (or her if Mo is short for Maureen or something) to report a week after the official start date.

My WAG is that this person is starting as an ALJ for payroll purposes on Aug. 10 but is using annual leave/credit hours for the first week and not physically reporting until Aug. 17. SSA might be ok with such an arrangement if the August start group is such a small one that they will not be going to training until the September starters go - by then, even if someone did start a week late in August, they would still have more than the usual three weeks under their belt before going to training. Otherwise, yes, extenuating circumstances would very likely be necessary.
I know it was reported here somewhere that the August group is going to training "on schedule" even though there are supposedly only a handful of them but I'm dubious they will actually hold a training where the trainers outnumber the trainees. Then again, the federal government has been known to be a bit inefficient on rare occasion... ;-)

When I came on board as a writer I still had a practice to shutter. They allowed me to come in on a Monday, get sworn in and do all the paperwork then immediately go on 6 weeks leave without pay. My service comp date is the day I was sworn in.
Harder with aljs and the set training schedule, but I would say the agency tries very hard to be accommodating.

One week into my "Operation total practice shut down in 14 days" and now he chimes in " they allowed me to come in, get sworn in and then go on 6 weeks leave" !!! Was this something you asked for from the HOD or the HR specialist? In regards to the August 17th date, Occam's Razor would suggest that the date in the email is a typo.

Sorry JI. When I got the call offering the job and telling me the start date, I asked for an extension to close shop. The lady (from region, I think) gave me the HOD's number and told me to call and discuss that with her. I did, the HOD was very understanding and was the one to suggest the LWOP thing. Was awesomely nice of them, but I did not get the impression mine was an odd request or that I was getting any kind of particulary special consideration. Now, I don't think they will just throw it out there, but if you ask I really do think they want to make it easy on you and it's not an uncommon request.

Its important to remember Funky is talking about getting a writer position (in this post) not an ALJ position. There appear to be significant differences in how such a request would be treated between the two jobs.
