I think this means Monday is a few folks' lucky day. So I just got a call to schedule an interview for next week with SSA. Very surprised since I just got on the register two weeks ago, and very surprised because I thought the cities on my GAL were in too high demand by existing ALJs. Tough decisions ahead. Congrats and good luck!

This next set of certs is going to be very interesting. Yes it will be. On one hand there are cities that are still "alive" from the 62 cities pulled in April. By alive, I mean that city had no new hires, no transfers and no FOAD letters. We do not have a large enough sample to accurately way on which cities they are. (is there such a thing as an accurate wag??) Then we will have cities that haven't shown up, or appeared on the first set of certs in FY 2014. Sometimes I think SSA said to OPM "can we just interview everyone else on the register who has a score greater than X". I know they can't really do that, but I have a feeling that everyone who got a call on Friday and today are these one city/two city folks with good scores. Feel free to prove me wrong!

No, sealaw I believe there is an intent to see as many of the remaining candidates on the register than SSA may wish to see within limits. Does it mean those candidates will be hired, not necessarily? It just allows SSA to view additional candidates it might want to choose from in the future.

Not in disagreement with you mpd, just hard to type clear, coherent sentences on the darn phone! No guarantee of getting a job but gives ODAR a deeper pool to select from. However, because they plan on hiring so many, many will eventually get"the call"•

It is very odd that SSA hasn't let the interviewees know which cities they are being considered for. (excuse my grammar) It doesn't bother me, I selected these cities and I can go in the drop of a hat. However, if you have already been interviewed, the suspense must be killing you! Are you in the running for another one of your cities? Arrggh! Hopefully we will have enough folks who ley us know their city (via a pm or post) si everyone else can see where they stand.

Many are called but few are chosen.

We will have a very good idea what cities are on the certs shortly after the cert emails are sent.

It is very odd that SSA hasn't let the interviewees know which cities they are being considered for. (excuse my grammar) For purposes of clarity for newer members here, no one is interviewed "for" a particular city or cities. You get on a cert because of your cities, and they may end up honoring the ranked city preferences you give ODAR when they do send your paperwork, but they interview you to see if you are a good fit with the agency as an ALj, not to see if you are the sort of person who will get along well with HOCALJ "Sid in Seattle".

I also got a call today, which shocked me as my GAL is tiny and, to my knowledge, hasn't appeared on a cert before. I wasn't expecting to ever make a cert unless I got the chance to expand my GAL.
Sadly, the only dates they could offer for interviews are next week, and I'm going to be out of the country both next week and the week after. I just can't see a way to get to Falls Church without blowing up a long-planned family vacation, and I just can't do that. I really hope this doesn't mean I'm missing my only shot at getting a job off of this register, but I fear it probably does. Anyone have any words of wisdom?

Does it mean those candidates will be hired, not necessarily? It just allows SSA to view additional candidates it might want to choose from in the future. I also think SSA may be intending to make even more use of "nonconforming space" offers in these upcoming rounds of hiring. Offices that previously may have been thought to be full definitely can be in play once SSA starts considering any open office as a potential ALJ office. Similarly, some sitting ALJs may be passing on transfer offers if the offered office is nonconforming, which could have the effect of leaving spots open for new hires in offices otherwise quite popular according to transfer lists. One thing we do know: SSA has to get to their budgeted hire #s for FY2015 one way or another - that is Federal Budgeting 101. Tapping nonconforming space would definitely be a method that helps them do that, and it also helps them see more candidates on the register.

Feb, I'm sorry to hear that. I don't have anything to offer but hope I don't fall into your exact situation. Good luck!

I would love to step aside and let someone else take my spot if it wouldn't count as a strike against me. Did you already tell them you were not available, and if so, what did they say?

Typically you get the cert email with your cities before the call to schedule the interview so you know what cities are in play before you go. They probably figure you can wait for the email.

Here's my shot at some words of wisdom: Ask your family if they'd be ok with you taking 24 hours out of a two-week vacation for your only guaranteed shot in the near future at a potential virtual lifetime appointment to a six-figure job. Don't forget to mention that the government will pay for your trip, at least in part. P.S. The job comes with generous paid vacation benefits.

I know people on this board like to speculate. But I decided to just pick up the phone and get real answers. And I got some. Feel free to PM me for details.
