It's the way they do things, do say some nice words to your references and thank them for their patience.

It's the way they do things, do say some nice words to your references and thank them for their patience. Be nice to references? Thank them? That's absurd! Kidding. Start a new job in private practice. Take time off for interviews. Boss is called as reference. Not hired. Next round, boss called again. And repeat. People are busy and tire of admitting how awesome you are. Particularly when they are paying you to work for them.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you or anyone in a similar spot can do about it if you have to use the same references.

Wish they had told us this in the beginning. Thank goodness for this board!

Just curious if those whose references were recontacted were in the first cert and required to update references because they had been submitted before November 1.

I was on the first cert and had to update my paperwork but I did that in April. They are only now re-calling references. I had forgotten this until now, but I actually called SSA in April when we had to resubmit paperwork to ask if they were recontacting references and they said we only had to resubmit because the paperwork was only good for a year. I was told they'd only be doing a very limited check at that time, which did not include recontacting references (with the exception of your current supervisor).

I have been on every cert, with an extremely small GAL, and all of my references have been called a second time - last time was in the fall. Don't think they mind talking to SSA, but they sure are curious what is going on (as am I)

So far beenlurking is the only person from the recent interviewees who has reported that his references were contacted this week. The rest of the folks have been previously interviewed off one of the earlier certs. I hate to say this, but I have a feeling that the 10 pointers and all previous interviewees will get hired first. The rest of us (recently interviewed) may have to wait our turn... I reserve the right to change my mind if my references start getting called in the next week.

I don't know where I read it but believe somewhere on this board is a post from another 10 pointer who just recently interviewed as well. So, there me be holes in your theory Sealaw. Of course, I may be dreaming that I read that and hope you are right and I'm one of them. Back at you.

So a whole week has gone by and the contract reference checkers have only hit the references for a half dozen board members? I find that hard to believe and strange to not be hearing from anyone else here. Still no contact with my references...really wish we had better insider information on the timeline.

A reference just let me know that he was called. Doesn't mean anything except that the process is moving along.

Do not worry. It is part of the process. They are actually checking your patience. Also, remember that the Chinese have to approve release of your personal information to the contractors since they have it.

Me too! I'm wondering if they are concentrating on the candidates for the cities they know they will hire this month. In other words, if exnicious interviewed for city A and I interviewed for city B, but ODAR knows there is no immediate opening in cities A and B, they didn't pass our references to the contractors. Instead, they will provide our documents next month, so calls can be made and our packages will be ready if/when our city is actually able to accommodate a new ALJ, which may be in October or January. Just a thought...

Just a thought... Sealaw90 as you know you don't interview for a city, but for a SSA ALJ position. Your GAL certs to which you listed with OPM and SSA are what landed you an opportunity to interview, but there is no guarantee SSA may actually hire for your GAL cert city in the end. However, once you had an interview you are set to go. There really is no rhyme or reason as to when reference calls are made. Contractors are hired randomly to make the calls and some are more efficient then others in making the calls. I don't think SSA is holding back names from city certs it plans on hiring later. It's just the contractor(s) hired to do the calls for you and several others may be slower in accomplishing their task. When my turn was up for reference calls, everyone else who interviewed seemed to be getting their references called, while mine were not. Then, suddenly all my references were called within one day. It's just a crazy, maddening process and trying to make some sense out of it will do no good at all. Just sit back and be happy you had an interview as that is all that is needed right now to have your name "in the barrel" for a possible appointment for an ALJ position. Don't let the possibilities drive you nuts. Take a deep breath in through your nose and exhale it out through your mouth several times. It will all be okay!
