Looks like they are still at it. The last of my references was contacted for the first time this morning.

Has anyone ever received an offer and not had ALL of their references called? Strangely enough, it has been over a week since all of my judicial and adversarial references have been called as well as all of my supervisors. However, none of my personal references have been contacted.

As an aside, how many references are required and do you only give judges as references. Do you ever use non attorney references?

Funkyodar stated in a recent post that several of his references weren't contacted, yet he received an offer. So, please do not read anything into the fact that not all of your references have been contacted.

Hoping they just decided it wasn't necessary to contact all for a good reason.

Sorry if this has been covered somewhere else... When do they ask for a list of references? In a 2010 thread, I see that they asked for 9 references: 3 judges, 3 attorneys, and 3 "other". Is that list different now? Jlt, I am not sure where you are in the process, but an agency will request references sometime before or after (depending on which agency) your interview with them. This is AFTER you make the ALJ register which is controlled by OPM. You are not asked for references by OPM as part of the testing process. As far the number of references, you have to go back 15 years and include your supervisors in addition to the 9 other references you mentioned. No repeats, i.e., I supplied 12 different people.

Dumb question: what if one (or more) of your supervisors from one of your prior jobs has retired and you have no idea what their contact info is? Do you just use the next person up the chain of command (provided that person is still there as well)?

One caveat to Sea's post. That is what ODAR asks for and the reference questions are ODAR's as well. Other agencies may ask for different references and different questions of the references.

The only thing you can do is try to find someone in management who was managing when you were there. In a pinch, I think you could use a peer who worked with you, but give an explanation for why you are deviating from the required response. In my situation, I did both -- provided another manager who only vaguely remembered me, and a peer from that job who knew my work. Nothing like overkill.

If you really want to find your supervisor, I've used the state bar's online public directory to contact a couple of folks from deep in my past.

If you really want to find your supervisor, I've used the state bar's online public directory to contact a couple of folks from deep in my past. Did they remember you? Is 15 years really that far back? This is a definite issue with the military and I utilized a former active duty supervisor to also speak about my reserve time. I disagreeumption is ODAR wants to account for the last 15 years of your life and you need to provide people who can attest to your abilities in an appropriate and meaningful way. Finally, for all of you lucky folks who are about to partake in the 3rd pass testing in DC, do NOT even think about references now! Seriously, between testing and SSA interview could be 2 years! You could be in a new job, new marriage, have a kid, joined a commune, moved to Colorado, or any else. You may have new references then that you don't have now. One step at a time...

However, none of my personal references have been contacted. 8 of my 9 references have been contacted. The remaining one is a professional reference.

On 8/27 an OPM special agent (not a contractor) left a card at the house of my former girlfriend with information to contact him to discuss my application for a "position of trust." I did not list her on any forms and as far as I recall all of my references were professional. She has not called him yet. Has anyone else had personal or professional references contacted by OPM special agents?

It might be interesting to know how OPM found her name and contact information, and perhaps even more interesting is why?

Yes, she is going to ask. We did live together for years so I'm sure her name could pop up in a background check. The agent left his personal card and an information card, which states: "Your comments regarding this individual's fitness and suitability will be greatly appreciated." So it is a follow up of some kind. Seems odd as the individuals I listed on the pre-interview background info form were contacted by phone.

Not asking for your response just making a guess....kind of disturbing. I did once get an email on an address I know that I never provided.

I just returned from vacation this week, and found out my references were being contacted. Does having references contacted mean the interviews did not give you the dreaded "Do not recommend" ranking? Or do they check everybody's references? (FYI, I'm not an insider or a 10-point vet.) They check everyone. They don't necessarily call all of a person's references, but performance on the interview has nothing to do with the reference checks.

They are not doing a full background check at this point usually. Where could they have gotten the information about her name and location outside of a full blown background check? Could one of your other references, particularly supervisory ones, have steered them in that direction? Are you in DC area? Does OPM handle the full background checks for ODAR? You applied for immigration judge as well, yes? I wonder if it has something to do with that.

Are there any other federal jobs you are applying for, security clearances, etc? Just wondering if it is possibly related to another position?
