Does anyone have any information about the Admin Judge positions at US Department of Agriculture? Just noticed they posted a few openings today. Interestingly these positions sound exactly the same as their "hearing officer" position. Same grade and job series (GS-13, 0930). I figure maybe they convereted all their "hearing officer" positions to "Admin Judges". See link

Hmmm, when a JD is not required but only preferred, and it is not an 0905 position, it doesn't really sound like a good opportunity to me.

What's the difference between 0930 and a 0905 series job?

0905 is an attorney position. An 0935 is an administrative law judge position. The 0930 positions have no particular title, but a hearing officer may be a 0930. If so, they do not get involved in hearings that are subject to the Administrative Procedures Act. To quote OPM, "Unlike Attorney work, Hearings and Appeals work lacks professional requirements. It does not require a degree, professional legal education, or admission to the bar." For example, there are RNs who are Medicaid hearing officers who are quite capable of holding a hearing. JDs can perform the position as well, but your JD is not required.

I saw this as well as on Wednesday, and was wondering about the locations, because they were unclear. Are there only three offices in the U.S.? Are they opening new ones? Where are they? Is is 100% telework job meaning I could move to Costa Rica and hold hearings by video? I called the number which told me to email them. No answer yet to my email and the posting expires today! -----Original Message----- From: [Quesera] Sent: Wednesday, August 19, 2015 9:18 AM To: PHILADELPHIA.MAIL@OPM.GOV Subject: Question re: Job Announcement Number: PH-15-MAC-1476510 Job Title: Administrative Judge my.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/412325300To Whom it May Concern: I am interested in applying, but unclear on the potential locations negotiable for selectees. Can you tell me the possible locations for official duty station?

I would not write off a position because it is jd preferred. Maybe I am biased. I went to law school because it would give me the type of training and credentials to open the door to varied job opportunities. My first job though I was licensed was in a jd preferred position. It was great. My boss was great. The work was interesting. Part of why it was jd preferred was that they hired 5 folks with varying degrees to meet various needs. My job involved enforcing fair housing laws. This job boosted my resume and provided great references. I am certain i got future attorney jobs in part because that boss said i was the best thing since sliced bread. Although others may not have even had jds they were highly skilled professionals. I have actually found sometimes to have nonlawyer colleagues to be enjoyable but I digress. Better to do earlier in your career I must admit. Some 20 years into my career I would take a jd preferred job if the work was consistent with my skills and it involved a mission that I would enjoy contributing to.
In short embrace. Opportunity you never know.

Quesera,
Did you ever get a response to your question?

Looks like Gary answered her in part. The locations listed in the job announcement and reproduced by Gary are where they're hiring right now. Any other answer would be mere speculation at this point. My interpretation is that you would have to live in the metropolitan statistical area of the locations listed in order to take the job. It does not mean you have to live there now. It also appears that you would work from home, living in those areas, and then travel from there. Other interpretations are possible and welcome.

Just curious at to how many people applied for the Admin Judge positions at US Department of Agriculture and how many got referred to the agency? and what locations did you apply for?
As I understand it, OPM sent out the "referred" notice to the top qualified applicants last week.

I applied for all five of the locations listed. I think southern california region was left off list in this thread. I was referred for three of these locations. However, I don't know how to tell which three it was. Good luck to all who applied.

Applied for 2 and referred for 2. No idea if even the "referral" will result in anything!

I applied for this for a single location, got referred, and have not heard anything yet. The referral letter gave me indications that I was not referred for the other locations even though I didn't apply for them. It seemed to refer to each location by numbers and not specific name so I couldn't tell which one I would have been referred to if I had applied for more than one. Good luck folks.

For the lucky ones who have been referred does anybody know what happens next or an idea about when interviews will take place? Has anyone been contacted yet?

I have not yet been contacted. From what I understand there will likely be a phone call to schedule a structured interview.
I have no idea when that will happen and I have not heard of anyone being contacted yet. I would love to have people chime in, if and when they are contacted.
