Why not hire everyone on the register, all are qualified. All will be needed.....get them on board now, put them in one of their GAL's, some offices may be a little heavy on Judge's but with transfers going like crazy right now, there is room for all. Plus claimants are waiting 12-15 months for a hearing with an ALJ, a few extra judges across the board may help reduce the lag time! Come on ODAR, bring us on!!! You are aptly named.

Gaidin, Ratty, and anyone else who may have insight here -
I've seen over and over again Tupelo, Cincinnati, Middlesboro and Mt. Pleasant being referred to as "the golden ticket," i.e., if those ODAR sites are on your GAL you have a better chance of getting picked from the register. I've learned some details on the difficulties of the Mt. Pleasant area, and I can imagine why remote Middlesboro and Tupelo (despite the Elvis connection) might be less than wonderful. However, Cincinnati?!? It's a beautiful river city, big enough for lots of things to do yet not so large that it'll swallow you, and so forth... So, could someone please tell me what in the world it is about Cincinnati that makes it a place that ALJs are known to want to escape from?

Tupelo: less than wonderful? Everyone keep thinking that. I will stay in my beautiful little southern city, where my dollar is 15% nore valuable than anywhere else, where my taxes are insanely low, with no snow to shovel, where I can buy a mansion for the cost of a cardboard box in most big urban areas, where my kids go to a top rated school, where I am less than an hour from a major SEC university, less than 2 hours from 2 more such universities, have excellent healthcare and every store I could possibly want to shop in no further than an hour away and most within 10 minutes. You go find a more wonderful place and leave crapland to those of us willing to "rough it."

Instead, it is that people want to get back to their home. The "golden ticket" refers to any offer. Those cities you listed just happen to be revolving door offices due to a variety of reasons. Some as you said are remote, but more than anything they are not "home" for the majority who leave. I have repeatedly heard great things about staff in all of those locations. It is simply a personal choice for people who want to be elsewhere and not a negative about the city.

No offense meant, funky! I've not been to Tupelo but it'd probably be right up my alley - as I've indicated on other threads, my three top choices are what I hope (and apparently I'm correct) the masses consider to be well-placed in crapland! In fact, Middlesboro probably would be OK for me too, and certainly from what I know Cincinnati. As noted, I have heard from a good source that Mt. Pleasant is a pretty rough place. Again, I've noticed that more than one of our Board members has identified Mt. P, Cincy, Middlesboro and, yes, Tupelo as places that, if on your GAL, increase your chances of getting a job. If that's so, I'm hopeful that my choices are following closely on their heels. I, too, want everyone to think they are less than wonderful. I'm glad for you that you're in a place you love and that is so good for your family - take care!

I certainly understand your point. I'm still wondering, though, why Cincinnati in particular would be one of those revolving-door places. It seems to me Cincy would be identified as a very desirable location by large numbers of people, and "home" to more than a few. I'd expect more requests for transfers to the Queen City, as it's known along the Ohio River, rather than away from it. Ah well -

I think the SEC is the only conference where it is not a rules violation to have more than one player with the first name "Major."

"Ole Miss"? Some sort of strange use of the word "major" with which I am unfamiliar. Ace,
I busted up laughing on that post!
It took me some time in Tupelo to learn who was an Old Miss v. Miss State fan, because some folks would get offended if you got it wrong. But Funky is right about Tupelo, it's a great little city that has everything you need or want close by with Memphis a short drive away.
But, I am from that neck of the woods (Tennessee near the Mississippi border) and would go back there in a heartbeat if I ever got tired of the cold winters here in Canada (Idaho, but close enough). Everything up here is at least 10% more expensive than the South and gas is on average, 70 cents higher per gallon than the Memphis/Tupelo area. Plus, Funky said he would give me back my old office if I came back to Tupelo, I think he misses Hilltopper and I! IMHO tiger

It warms my heart to hear such talk of my home state! An ALJ would certainly be in "high cotton" in Tupelo, hence Funky's generously-stocked suds locker!
