If you do the 4/10, you can't do credit (unless that changed and I missed it). Also, everytime you get one of those great federal holidays (like Labor Day next week), you only get 8 holiday hours. So, you have to burn 2 hours of credit or leave to take the day off. Also, and I can't stress this enough, make sure you know what the hearing room availability in your office is. If you declare for the 4/10 schedule thinking you will get Fridays off...what happens if you( as the lowest judge on the ladder), get stuck with Monday/Friday hearings? Wanna take Wednesdays off? I would LOVE Wednesdays off. This 4/10 schedule sounds pretty fabulous. I'm coming into this from a very different position. I am a senior ADA. Though I have had my lazy weeks I also had two week long trials for capital offenses in August. Those are very long days. Plus the added weekend work. The idea that I can skip Wednesday's or any day by putting in more hours during the week is wonderful. The thing about being a state employee around here is that it's 8 to 5 Monday through Friday no matter how you actually work. I appreciate the Feds philosophy.

I can't give you the Feds philosophy, but I do think that public service is not for everyone. It is a calling. You work as hard as you can and receive no more compensation than the ALJ who is producing 150 cases less than you. This can make you angry, sad, and disillusioned, if you let it. This can cause many to reach for the lowest common denominator or hide under the radar. However, I chose to think that I am serving as many people as I can and doing it as fairly as I can. I cannot control others. I also find I need a balance in life - I cannot be a good ALJ if I put in too many hours and ignore my family/friends. They give me life, spirit, and sense of joy. Without it, I'm miserable and ultimately, less productive. Advice - do the best you can and maintain a balanced life.

Flowing; very good post!
The board here is typically full of rants, raves and sarcasms (my hand raised ever so slowly and timidly slightly above my head...) but I agree; I really like this job. It is indeed a position I had intentionally maneuvered myself to for previous decades.
I have told my kids; a job is a job, you are going to be there a long time, find one you really like. If you do not like it, move on. Same applies here.

I hope you get/got that HOCALJ position and that your line judges are as rational as you are.

"line judges"?
Oh this is good and will ruffle some feathers in regard to comparison to the now infamous Posner chicken deboner allegory.
