My boss has still not been contacted, all of my other references were contacted weeks ago. ? My supervisor was contacted, but one professional reference still has not been called. I also received notice my driving record was checked but not my credit. It' a confusing process. The credit check, criminal history check, and reference checks are done for everyone who gets on a cert with no consistent timeframe as they are sent to different contractors who do them at various times. I have never heard of anyone having their driving record checked though! That is different.

Perhaps it was your insurance company checking your driving record. I think they do that periodically, especially before they renew a policy.

I think it is a state by state thing whether you get notification. A few states required that we complete special forms for the driving record check. Mine was one of them. Perhaps Ironmanlawyer's was too.

So, for certs in the past, for how many days have they made calls/offers? Today is day three (with no calls on Monday). Do we think they are done or do we have another day or two?

What are they looking for on the credit check? Just curious. Bad credit, being over extended. Just like any job that runs a credit check.

As of this week, it is against the law in New York City to discriminate in employment on the basis of credit (with exceptions as to fiduciary relationships and people who handle large amounts of money). This is an issue on which many people have strong opinions in both directions. I'm glad to see this statute enacted. In my opinion (and I know some will not agree), there is no reason why personal financial credit should be in the hiring equation for most jobs.

This is an issue on which many people have strong opinions in both directions. I'm glad to see this statute enacted. In my opinion (and I know some will not agree), there is no reason why personal financial credit should be in the hiring equation for most jobs. For ALJ I can see credit being an issue because of the background check that will have to be passed. But generally what they are worried about are falling behind on paying bills or defaults. I know contingency lawyers can live in a perpetual existence of feast to famine and some are always carrying large balances on their credit cards. As long as you are paying your bills on time the background check investigators are generally not concerned, unless your stated income would clearly indicate that you should not be reasonably be able to pay the bills with the income you are admitting to. This came from a conversation I had with my investigator when I got my first clearance (Top Secret). In that case we sat down with my credit report (among a great deal of other things) and went down every listing to confirm all accounts were actually mine. She explained that as long all bills were being paid as agreed, the only thing she looked for were large repayments that did not match up with income. I am currently in a public trust position (I believe this is what ALJ are but I am not sure) and for that investigation, the interview was much more brief and the credit portion only confirmed that I wasn't behind on anything. I have taken advantage of some 0% offers so I had some large balances on my cards at that time in addition to my student loans and my background check went through with no problems. Unless someone's credit situation pretty obviously shows serious financial problems, I don't think credit is really in the equation for the ALJ situation, at least not as a ranking factor. I would think it could only be used as a factor if it would clearly preclude the ability to hold the necessary clearance. Using credit reports as a ranking factor would open the Agency to the possibility of EEOC complaints and I can't imagine that OPM would allow the practice.

One thing they are supposed to be evaluating during a background check for public trust position (or higher) is a susceptibility to bribery or extortion. If you have a dire personal need for money, your federal action might be bought...or so the logic goes anyway.

The notices in my state show who made the inquiry, and it was not my carrier. It was another company. I'm not concerned with it. There is nothing on my driving record.

So do we think they're done making calls? Since the general consensus is today is the last day to do it you'd think we'd have heard something by now. But, then again, who knows what the logic is behind all of this...
