I noticed a thread here discussing union letter to our new DC Terrie Gruber. So, I figured I'd remind every one that there's an election coming up. Remind current ALJs to vote. And remind incoming judges to sign up, have your voice heard. I'm running for treasurer. You can find out about some of the candidates from this website. www.WeAreJudgesFirst.org or thevalueofwork.com/Warning, you may have to cut and paste this link. Because chatboards such as this strip the link, and you might have to turn off popup blockers if you click join.

You realize you just outed yourself on the Board?
FWIW: Both links worked just fine for me.

As long as it was intentional, that's fine.
Good luck!

I've only been a union member for a short time. Before an election, is there some sort of forum for speeches and questions? Is there a single place to go and read about the candidates?

All of the ALJs who are running have impressive credentials. For those who want to join the ALJ ranks, their credentials are a window to the competition. I hope those who are selected can work well with management and understand that much can be accomplished with a positive demeanor and exchange of ideas. Best of luck!

We cannot use office time or equipment to do electioneering activities.
you can scheck the aalj.org website which is the alj website.
Traditionally, in the past, candidates have sent out materials. YOu may get some on your home address if you provided a home email to the union.
Also, the alj conference will be held in New Orleans this year. You can learn about candidates then also.

Is there a legitimate expectation of new blood?

No prop, no new blood on the above referenced site Snook is an old timer who was just cited in WaPo complaining about having to work. www.washingtonpost.com/sf/national/2014/10/18/the-biggest-backlog-in-the-federal-government/The Miami office is a national embarrassment look at their average processing time. Graduated Coast Guard Academy in 1967 when he was roughly 22 so hes about 70 years old give or take. Been a judge since 1997 involved with AALJ for awhile. You can't vote for Snook or Zahm and expect anything different both OHA relics who don't want to work and fight with mgmt. over nothing.

I would suggest that this is not the forum for electioneering and I will go one step further an ask Pixie to close this thread.

I agree. There should be no expression of opinion about candidates or the union on this board, which Pixie has indicated has a narrow purpose.
I do think, however, that candidates or their supporters should be able to provide links to the readership so they can, if they so choose, get candidate literature. This would help promote knowledge of candidate positions, but not convert the board in into one where there is any candidate or union bashing, and would require anyone who was interested to actually email the candidates and ask for their literature or go to their websites.

Ah the sanctity of an online forum.... if not here then where? I'm sensing for the 2 above posters ideally nowhere.
don't like it don't click on the topic...short of outright harassment or criminal behavior why does this space need to be regulated?
- my 2 cents

I didn't read anything in the article about him "complaining about having to work." I found the article interesting and insightful into what is contributing to the backlog.

I can see a ban on electioneering as Chinook put it but I do think that discussions of the Union and its performance fall within in the stated purpose of the Board. Certainly, the Union wants to opportunity to get members at training and if not for this space where would new ALJs get any idea of sitting ALJ's perspective of the Union. If people can come here and bash management, OPM, standardized testing, etc. Why not a discussion of the Union?

"“Now, why did I pay it?” Snook said. “I could have taken the time to make it clear the guy wasn’t depressed. But . . . I was under a lot of pressure to move it along, and I gave up. And I’m human.”
agency quotas... so much pressure.. whine whine whine same story different day.
this purported pressure is a myth the AALJ keeps telling you is real and important so they have something to fight to justify your dues.

Gaidin, I believe the "AALJ makes me Cringe" is a good place to discuss the pros and cons of the Union.

Hmmm...remind me again how you have any knowledge of what pressures an ALJ feels? I don't routinely agree with the union's Positions or methodology, but to claim the very real backlog, production and time pressures are myths, without any first hand knowledge, is asinine.

To equate discussing pressure to "make numbers" in the face of an insurmountable backlog with one "not wanting to work" is quite a stretch. I work my butt off as an attorney and am constantly under pressure to produce more/resolve more cases. This pressure often lends one to be forced to do less work on a case bc you simply have no other alternative. This harms the quality of the work and the clients. No one better call me lazy to my face for pointing out those competing interests whenever asked.

I have been wary of this thread since its inception. I don't feel this board is the place for electioneering. Nor do I feel this board is the proper forum for union bashing, or management bashing. That really isn't what we are about. Pixie
