Irvine, CA
Irvine (/ˈɜrvaɪn/ ur-vyn) is a city in Orange County, California, United States. It is a planned city, mainly developed by the Irvine Company since the 1960s. Formally incorporated on December 28, 1971, the 66-square-mile (170 km2) city[11] had a population of 212,375 as of the 2010 census; in 2015 the city's population was 250,384.[7] The city's mission statement is "to create and maintain a community where people can live, work, and play in an environment that is safe, vibrant, and aesthetically pleasing".[12]
Because Irvine is home to highly-rated public schools, a large number of jobs requiring a skilled workforce, and residential housing, Irvine was chosen in 2008 by CNNMoney.com as the fourth best place to live in the United States.[13] In 2012, it was ranked sixth nationally.[14] In September 2011, Businessweek listed Irvine as the fifth best city in the United States.[15] Irvine consistently ranks as the safest city in America with a population over 100,000.[16] In 2014, Irvine was named the best-run city in the U.S. by 24/7 Wall Street.[17] A number of corporations have their national or international headquarters in Irvine, particularly in the technology and semiconductor sectors.
Irvine is home to the University of California, Irvine (UCI), Concordia University, Irvine Valley College, the Orange County Center of the University of Southern California (USC), Brandman University, California Southern University, Stanbridge College and campuses of California State University Fullerton (CSUF), University of La Verne, Pepperdine University, Alliant International University, Kaplan International Colleges, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and Webster University.
Joey Allen the guitarist from Warrant is from Irvine. So break out your acid washed jeans.

i don;t think doggies are allowed on Amtrak! and im totally in on Irvine too!! after all, the dog has a "Dad" too. I'll give up some doggie visitation for orange county!!! i think i can persuade the kids to join mom sooner rather than later to live near the Calif beaches while Dad (and the dog) sell the house!
Thanks G for the info, Based on board comments, i will put a pencil mark to blot out Fresno....

If you end up on a cert or certs, one of which is for Fresno, you can take Fresno off your list. I've already removed some CA locations, Fresno among them. Yes, Phoenix is s sought after location. 2 ODAR offices there. Lots of people sitting on the transfer lists for those offices, (though as has been discussed elsewhere, many don't take the transfer when offered as it is not the time for their family to move. and 71stretch, what is up with Fresno? i have never been there to be honest, is it a creepy city? a challenging office? Truly asking. since it seems to be a hard city to attract or keep judges at, that is an issue that raises a yellow flag in my mind. thanks I know nothing of Fresno first hand, none of what I know first hand is very flattering. It was a logical city to remove once I got out of "I will go to a whole big long list of cities for this job" mode.

Long Beach, CA
I tried to find a Snoop Dogg song that I felt was safe for the Board. I was unsuccessful. But Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas is also from Long Beach so I give you a much work friendly and equally iconic California song.
Long Beach is a city in Los Angeles County in Southern California, on the Pacific coast of the United States. The city is the 36th-largest city in the United States and the seventh-largest in California. As of 2010, its population was 462,257.[14] In addition, Long Beach is the second largest city in the Greater Los Angeles Area (after Los Angeles) and a principal city of the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The Port of Long Beach is the United States' second busiest container port and one of the world's largest shipping ports.[15] The city also maintains a large oil industry with wells located both underground and offshore. Manufacturing sectors include those in aircraft, car parts, electronic and audiovisual equipment, and home furnishings.
Downtown Long Beach is located approximately 22 miles (35 km) south of Downtown Los Angeles, though the two cities border each other for several miles on Long Beach's southwestern portion. Long Beach borders Orange County on its southeast edge.[16]

Brush with fame moment: I once danced on the same dance floor as Michelle Phillips in a Mexcian nightclub! She was, er, clearly enjoying the evening.

Fresno is in inland central California. It is an agricultural town with lots of migrant farming; it is hot and dry. It has been a resettlement area as far back as the 70s with a large Hmong population among others. There is lots of poverty, lots of working class folks. It is a three to four hour drive to any city with a more vibrant city atmosphere so, at least in California standards, its kind of isolated. You get most of the problems with California (extreme heat and drought) with very few of the benefits - not a visually pretty area. I have known people who worked in the office and thought it was ok as a writer - but that is the most sheltered/least affected position in any office. They have a harder time than many offices getting and keeping HOCALJs, even as the agency as a whole has a dearth in that area of interest.
You chose Fresno for the Job, not the location.

sapphire, Fresno sounds fine to me. is it safe? how far to the beach? I am thinking 2 to 3 hours.
is cost of living still high like other parts of Calif? is it not visually pretty by Calif standards or inner Detroit standards? do many of the folks work but just don't have a high income? or a combo of that and folks who don;t really work? and how hot is hot? i keep thinking East of Eden in my mind for looks which took place, in the book, not toooo far from there. is it maybe semi-arrid climate as opposed to full desert? thanks so much for info above and if time, answers to these questions.

By "beach" do you mean the one you see after crossing a great expanse of sand on a hot day with the sun beating down on your head, or do you insist on real water?
