The August issue of the NOSSCR Social Security Forum has info that SSA was hoping to hire 250 new ALJ's in FY 2015 but as of August 2015 had hired only 105 and ALJ attrition is about 100 to 125 ALJ's leaving every year. Is this typical where they miss the mark in hiring new ALJ's as well as replacing ALJ's lost through attrition?

Since the new paradigm of OPM supplying cert by city, there has been a bit of a slow down by SSA (aka "Puzzle Palace"). Of course this is a bit of an 'old hat' given that it has been discussed on these pages in detail.

And 105 isn't right, although I don't have the tally.

I really would not pay much attention to the man behind the curtain at NOSSCR

i thought it was closer to 200 new hires I think it was in the middle at ~150. I think they may have cleared the 175-180 threshold with the August and September classes.

thanks, i was not sure but i thought it was higher than op's numbers. Good break for me then and others. if i survive the next phase of testing, SSA and opm will both be eager to add new folks. timing and location are key for many things, apparently being an alj being among them

page 12: ...with an ideal ALJ staffing level of 1800-1900 ALJ's by 2018". Page 10: Graph says 1247 ALJ's as of March 2015. ~300 ALJ's will be lost to attrition from that count by 2018. Needed new ALJ hires to hit lowest target: 850 Aprox.

Where's the water post?

From the IG Report:
"ODAR executives cited recent budget constraints and working with a limited ALJ register from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) as the two main factors for the decrease in available ALJs.12"
Puzzle Palace wants to shift the blame for the paltry hirings onto OPM. The real issue is that unlike the past, they were unable to get to the folks they really wanted given the new paradigm of multiple certificates. Maybe the IG should not have taken what they were told at face value. Are they trying to say that under no circumstances could they have reached their budgeted goal in hiring with the Register that OPM afforded them? This is the question I would press at a Congressional hearing. Put even more bluntly, Claimants are dying to get a hearing. Where is Puzzle Palace's full court press to hire?
This is not the first time I've seen a IG report that drew conclusions based upon data that was flawed or at the very least had an agenda that the IG did not uncover. Maybe the IG had an agenda too.

I think it is important to read between the lines with respect to the ODAR Executives explanation.

Is the phrase "a limited ALJ roster" another smack down to those of us still on the register? I mean....hellllooooo still ready and waiting.... Perhaps I am overly sensitive, but I have never been accused of that.

zepp, i don;t think so. i think there are not that many folks left is all that meant. and yeah...... on above comment on reading between lines on some other issues :/ Glad about lots of desired ALJ hirings at least. now, time to prep and pass the DC portion.... for me. hoping those of you already on register get hired before i get my chance. Good luck to all.

"Limited register"? Well, the quickest way to fix that a bit is for OPM to allow GAL changes. They could probably expand that to include those still testing. That would give them more people to work with (including high scorers with small GALs ODAR may not have even seen yet).

That is in the works, but it still won't come near to the numbers they need when attrition is considered.

Or hey, hire those of us on the register and cert instead of (at least implicitly) insulting us publicly? Call me maybe.

Think of it this way.... They know they need another 250 in fiscal 2016. If they only see a potential 50 right now, they say the register is "limited." That does not say anything negative about the 50 they see who are reachable. Try on the half full ... it is more comforting than the half empty. No need to look at is as insulting.

Interesting information about hiring projections. Any thoughts on when they may begin accepting new applications?
Thanks
