Gaiden: Can you provide some clarification as to what you mean when you say "August class"? Are the class members ALJs that were hired from the July 2015 certs or from previous certs? The reason I ask is that your list includes San Jose. A cert was issued for San Jose in July 2015 but I do not believe there was a previous cert for that city from this register. Would appreciate any info.

Would appreciate any info. There was a small class of 12 that started in August and I believe just completed training. This is the class that sort of got lost in the shuffle because the OPM hack shut down most if not all background checks. I don't know one way or the other about San Jose. I trust implicitly my source on this but it is possible that their source had faulty information although I saw part of an original source so I think it is probably accurate.

Any idea how common those locations are for newly-minted ALJs?
Seems like the Bronx isn't a popular location to stay.

Bronx office is in a rough part of the Bronx. location alone could make people not want to stay long.

I guess thats true ... but fairly convenient to Subway, Metro North trains and the House that Ruth Built !
Office itself is in a pretty crummy old shopping center (with parking)
Although pretty gritty several courts nearby so its bustling during the day

iblurkin, im figuring it would be pretty bad after dark though, esp when there is no Yankees game. when i asked a former police officer with ties to the Bronx who basically said h... no about its safety, i figured that was bad news, i imagine during day would be ok and like you said, it;s near the subway and metro north trains. But what about leaving the office around 7:30 pm one evening? too late?

Your scenario of leaving the office at 7:30 pm shows a great work ethic but ODAR offices shut down at 6:00 pm, and while of course nobody comes around and actually shoos you out onto the street right on the dot at 6, you can't get credit for any work done after 6. I don't mind donating the odd 15-20 minutes from time to time if I am still in the middle of something at 6 pm but as a practical matter no one needs to worry about what the neighborhood looks like at 7:30 - you should be long gone by then!

The NYC offices including the Bronx are in places that are safe enough during working hours. Former nypd officers generally tend to be negative about everything. But perhaps our NYC is not for everyone. As far as the Bronx location goes, most aljs I know in all the agencies around there drive to work.

liz and iblurkin, would you mind giving us some insights on other offices in NYC area, including up to White plains? liz, i think you said you're in Jersey City. that office actually looks all right to me. and yes, that is true on nypd officers. Fair enough.
oh and regarding a previous question, i think Detroit and Akron also tend to pick up newcomers fairly often. if i am wrong on this, anyone who knows more than me, please chime in and correct this statement. thanks.

In short, I would say of the 5 Boros ... Manhattan is on paper best, Brooklyn a close second (some might prefer it to Manhattan), Queens is sort of far out of the way and a fairly crummy area...Bronx is more convenient but perhaps crummier than Queens (Staten Island is a video satellite of Jersey City) and then White Plains is fine its a city but a somewhat more corporate environment....sort of similar to Newark.... but smaller and retaining a somewhat suburban feel. Newark SSA location in my opinion considerably superior to Jersey City SSA location.
I'm just speaking about immediate neighborhoods.....as you know the commute is a major consideration anywhere in the NYC area( even with telecommuting!!)....If you're intent on setting up in Nassau County .... Queens might be perfect... I live in another boro and want no part of Queens ... because of the commute not the neighborhood...
It can get complicated, for example, the SSA location in JC is pretty crummy but its also home to up and coming residential neighborhoods...feel free to pm with any more specific questions

The Brooklyn office is rumored to be moving to 201 Varick Street in Manhattan any month now. That's another great location. Federal Plaza is good, but not the way it was pre-9/11. Queens is on Jamaica Avenue, which is lively and safe during working hours and close to a lot of transportation. I do not care for the south Bronx. I have held many arbitration hearings near all these locations, plus in White Plains which is a delight. Newark is light years better than it was 20 years ago when I started holding hearings a few blocks from the ODAR office location. The Newark HO is "steps away" from Newark Penn Station, there's a gym there and an office complex with shops now. Central Islip is a good location for those in Queens and Long Island who will commute by car. Again, I held hearings there for many years. The area around the Federal building in C.I. is fine and now has many amenities. And then there's the Jersey City HO location. Sadly, it is a wasteland, as I have said in other threads. When you're inside, it's a very pleasant place to work. Bring your breakfast, lunch and anything else you need for the day. Although downtown JC is rapidly becoming unrecognizably gentrified, the west side of JC has a long way to go. It is safe enough during working hours. I smile pleasantly at everyone on the light rail and keep my head down. Everyone is nice to the grey-haired old lady. If you are talking about living near these locations, then we're talking the entire NYC metro area. That's different.

I haven't lived in NYC since 1990s and it seems pretty much the same, although if you're actually there you see major changes, the advice on where to live in relation to where you'll be working sounds the same!

You mention Central Islip. Is there an ODAR office there? I thought the only LI office was in Jericho. Thanks.
