Denny Doherty, a great guy. Cass and Denny were with a band along with (I think) Zal and Sebastian who later formed the Lovin Spoonful. Groups were pretty fluid then,. I remember the Mugwumps and the Even Dozen Jug Band. They often played at a little place on Macdougal St in '64 and '65. I learned a lot of good guitar playing from them when I was in high school. Jim Croce and his wife played there a lot too, also at the Cafe Wha. What a time that was. Long before many of my ALJ colleagues were born.

Denny something? thanks lizdarcy for the info. i have heard so much of the Greenwich Village music scene from the 60's and i don't think those amazing days/times have been successfully duplicated anywhere else. Well i imagine London has some amazing music corners too so there may be some overlap between London/Manhattan there. And Gaidan, the Phillips(from the mama and papas) are the parents of at least 1/3 of your Wilson Phillips teenage crush i think Wilson is for Carney Wilson(if i got first name right), who is the daughter of one of the Beach boys, and i can't remember if the third band member is a Wilson or phillips...

Yep, Denny Doherty or Daugthrey; that is always a hard name for me. Lizdarcy got it right. While John Phillips was the songwriter, leader and arranger, Denny sang lead on many of the songs, including California Dreaming which Christina was so kind as to find and post for us. And yes, the Mugwumps was the initial name of the Mamas and the Pappas. That is before my time, though. Unfortunately, all of the Mamas and Pappas, other than Michelle (and I'm not sure about her) have passed on. Cass and John with heart failure and Denny with an aortic aneurysm. Pix.

Well i imagine London has some amazing music corners too so there may be some overlap between London/Manhattan there. As the board is still inactive due to the holiday, I think a little more frivolity is in order. A friend of mine was in law school at NYU during the 70s and I would visit her when I got a chance. What a great place to be in school! So many clubs in the Village, and NYU was right next door. Plus, the students from Columbia would come down and add to the festivities. Those days will never be repeated but it was fun while we were doing it. While not in the Village, the Beacon Theater, on the upper west side, had some great acts while I was in the City. A larger venue than anything I remember in the Village, it would (and still does) have sell out crowds for acts such as the Allman Brothers. And let's not forget Bill Graham's Fillmore East in the East Village. I never saw a show there, but did take a walk down 2nd Avenue (I believe it was) to see the old location after it closed. It was a classic. Pix.
