A highly reliable anonymous source asked me to post the following: I will try to impart some of the essence of Tennessee’s three certed cities as well as a sense of the state itself. First and foremost although Nashville claims the crown as Music City the whole state revels in its musical traditions. It wouldn’t be a good discussion of the state without some of the Official State Songs. The most beautiful is Tennessee Waltz sung here by the immortal Patsy Cline. So I had a friend from Tennessee who was getting married, and he wanted this beautiful song played at his wedding! I said "Dude, listen to the lyrics man, I'm pretty sure you don't want to play this at your wedding!" He listened to the lyrics, even though he's been "listening" to this song his entire life. They did not play it at the wedding! But, otherwise, a beautiful song! hahaha! My dad and I danced to the Tennessee Waltz at my wedding! (and we knew the words)

I should have just waited an anonymous source in the know about Pennsylvania sent me this.
Harrisburg, PA- Capital. middle of the southern part of state. Harrisburg is dull as can be but surrounding area is nice. Easy drive to Baltimore and Philly. DC is not too far away. four seasons. Temp ranges from 20's in winter to 90's in summer. Some snow but not like upstate NY. Summer days can range from fantastic with temps in low 80's with low humidity to high 90's with 100 percent humidity. Most summers cover this range of temperatures. Decent schools in suburbs for those who have school age kids.
Johnstown, PA- better than its reputation. town is economically depressed but very friendly people in area. there are some decent schools in outlying areas.
Philadelphia, PA- 2 offices only a few blocks from each other in "Center City" (Philly's term for what most would call downtown). Philadelphia ranges from impoverished to millionaires and you will see pretty much that whole spectrum within a 3 block radius. lots of public transportation. plenty to do. Great restaurants. Philadelphians are an odd mix of loving and hating their city at once so don't bash Philly too much near any locals. Despite their regular self-bashing, they are very very proud of their city.
Seven Fields, PA-swank suburb north of Pittsburgh. the nicest office location wise in Pennsylvania.
Plenty of outdoors stuff in warmer weather for whole state. most of well known skiing is in Poconos(easy to get to from Philly and fairly easy from Harrisburg). There is also a very well known resort between Johnstown and Pittsburgh and plenty of skiing with smaller operations in western part of pa.
Taxes are terrible anywhere in the state. worst in Philly.
I was asked to add that:
the nicer Philadelphia school districts offer lots for their students. living in one of them will likely mean longer commute but there is an extensive regional rail system so it is doable for anyone up for a long commute. some people commute in from new jersey as well.
pittsburgh also has some school districts that offer a lot to its students.

I'm born and raised in Philly. Lots of crime, poverty and now lousy public schools. Even some suburban schools are bad now. Catholic and Quaker schools are better, but Quaker schools are very expensive. If you're thinking about Philly, do not plan your commute on buses or Broad Street Subway (slow and/or disgusting). Commuter rail lines take you out of Center City FAST to liveable suburbs or gentrified Chestnut Hill neighborhood. PATCO train gets you to very nice NJ suburbs like Cherry Hill (which also has an ODAR office). Lower Merion is a lovely old neighborhood just across City Line with big, beautiful, affordable old stone houses and decent public and private schools and only 15-20 minute train ride to work. I wouldn't go back because my kids are elsewhere, and my mother is living near me. If you like Italian or Chinese food, it is plentiful and good. Yo, Adrian, put Philly on the GAL! Great zoo. Here's Rocky at the Zoo. .

Just reread my post. I sound too negative on Philly. It is a decent place to live for a big city. Great sports, history, restaurants, culture, people.

Harrisburg, PA also is right next to Hershey, PA and HersheyPark, which is a mecca for chocolate lovers, roller coaster enthusiasts, and also hosts all kinds of seasonal events that are a real treat to enjoy.

I tried to get some clarification if they just meant the office was nice or if we were supposed to believe somewhere in Pennsylvania was the nicest location on the certs. I'm not knocking Pennsylvania but I can't imagine anywhere that gets that cold and is that far from a beach being the nicest location. **** EDIT ***** They meant nicest location in PA.

Gaidin, It's easy to avoid Camden! Pennsauken has cheap liquor stores. Is it walled off like Manhattan in Escape from NY? bac did you see that about the liquor stores?

Not walled off, but bulldozed almost to oblivion by "urban renewal." You can drive or take a train through Camden without even knowing you've been there.

Did we forget Elkins Park? Montgomery county schools (or is it on the main line?) I thought that was going to be the nicest office because you never see an opening for new ALJs. I believe the ski resort mentioned between Johnstown and Pitt is Seven Springs. That place is awesome in all four seasons - if you haven't played disk golf on ski slopes in the summer - I highly recommend it! Everyone else can have Johnstown, but leave Philly and South jersey to me, if you know what's good for you...

Elkins Park is nice. Close-in northern suburb, not Main Line.

Harrisburg also close to Amish areas and Gettysburg. Some cool old towns nearby. The Amish flea markets are wonderful.
