I'd say there is basically a 0 percent chance that an office will hire a SAA from a different office. I've had a DWPI of greater than 100 for 13 years with non-stop awards and I wouldn't waste my time applying for SAA that aren't my office. I know several people who have gotten SAA positions in other offices. Sorry it has not worked for you. I think it’s much more common to see in-office promotions, but not exclusively, so I would encourage people to apply if there is an opening where they would be interested in working. You never know. Good luck to everyone applying. Same. I know several SAAs hired from other offices.

Seems like that would be quite an affront to the local writers, borderline toxic. Plus NTEU indicated that the agency noted a preference to promote from within the office.

If OHO wants to keep a ratio of 1 SAA to every 4 ALJs, then there will not be an SAA opening in my office until about 2032. My only hope is to go to another office. I don’t see how that’s toxic. Not toxic to you, but quite an affront to the AAs in the other office who didn't get promoted. Pixie

This happened recently in an office I'm familiar with. 2 SAA positions given to AAs from other offices. AAs in that office were very unhappy. It's "toxic" when management smiles and tell you they're advocating for more promotional opportunities, but when those opportunities finally arrive, they pull the rug out. I think what's most frustrating is the uncertainty of receiving adequate recognition for good performance. Performance awards are nice, but long term, people want to move up.

Per usual, they celebrate crumbs instead of fighting for a slice of the pie. I hope they continue to push for all AAs to get to 13, non-competitive, but merit based. Just about every other agency does that. As attorneys gain experience and deal with more complex cases or contribute in other ways, they become eligible for non-competitive promotion. Undoubtedly, this would assist with retention in terms of short term turnover.

I only heard about it here (rightspeech’s post above in May) and from another DW - it’s possible the agency said that after the hires in the office you mentioned.

www.usajobs.gov/job/6598673002 locations only. This does *NOT* appear to be open to the public, but would appreciate another set of eyes on this - just getting back into the swing of federal jobs.

Note my post June 9th--the one you noted is not open to the public but there is /was another that was open that I also noted on the June 9 post. Here's one that's open to the public from Treasury : GS 14 appeals officer. www.usajobs.gov/job/660173000

For folks with contracts experience, the ATF is hiring in DC (two openings). GS-15 money! Non-supervisory! A few good friends work at ATF and enjoy the GS-14/15 pay (not just in DC; field divisions across the country pay that). They also rave about the 9-5 schedule, telework (usually 2-3 days per week), and independence. www.justice.gov/legal-careers/job/attorney-advisor-442

More DoJ openings: a lot of them at GS-14/15 levels or equivalent. www.justice.gov/legal-careers/attorneys-vacancies?position=1 Disclaimer: I'm a long-time DOJ employee and do NOT speak for the agency. Finally decided SSA ALJ wasn't worth the extra money (for me at least) when I'm already a non-supervisory 15. Go I gave up the ALJ dream and am focused on being the best / happiest DoJ attorney I can be. I had a very high score on the register right before they scrapped it. I was heartbroken, but now realize it was the best thing that happened to me. I take leave whenever I want, often on short notice if I want to have lunch at school with my kids, help with their sports events, etc. I've loved the quality of life, chance to work with smart people, and the opportunity to make a difference. HOORAY, D-O-J!!
