PF - the Welcome page from May of 2007 states, "This board was created to promote the civilized exchange of information related to ALJ hiring after the trolls infested the old board (aka TOB) back in 2007. "
So, as I see it, discussions primarily about hiring are in line with the purpose of the board. I miss those who chose to leave and wish they hadn't been so quick to react dramatically to ALJD's decision to do away with the WWW and the implementation of the mute function. Those who have already been appointed, as well as those who are no longer interested in the process, may well be bored by the board. Still, no need to take potshots at the rest of us.

It has grown dull. Prior discussions that were rebuked were about hiring and the legal ramifications of not following regulations, among other things, so the discussions were not off topic, just too heated for some of the powers that be. On the positive side you can now check in once a week and not miss anything. We've slowed to the speed of paint.

Things blew up for two reasons. First, the primary goal of this board is to follow and share information about the ALJ hiring process, but threads were continuously being hijacked off topic. Second, the partisanship was just getting too wacky. When such mundane topics as national office caselaw updates turn into brainwashing conspiracies, things have sunk pretty low. Its the equivalent of accusing POTUS of brainwashing schoolkids with a "work hard in school" speech.
Nobody has been banned from posting on the site, and the administrator hasn't banned any topics. I personally haven't removed anyone's posts and would be perfectly happy to see some of those who have left return. I miss crushing their faulty logic with my omnipotence. Just stay on topic and don't turn a "what to wear to the interview" thread into an ODAR conspiracy to dump toxic waste in Danny Devito's backyard.
Otherwise... it sure is quiet...

Transfers are moving much more quickly and should continue, I suspect, till offers are made. Mine was tendered on August 20th and accepted and my report date is October 11th, after completion of travel docket for current office. 2 others from my class, also, were given offers in past week with reports end of October and early November.

Southerner, Would you mind telling us from and to which region(s) you and your two classmates are going? I'd like to know the cities too but would understand if you don't want to divulge that info. Thanks.

I know a lot of the July 09 class that have circled their calendars for 9/22 to immediately put in for a transfer. Me - I spent all my wad moving and don't plan on repeating the process anytime soon! But as for 2 judges in my office who have received no less than 3 transfer offers, all were declined due to the economy and inability to sell current homes.

Thanks, Legal Beagle. Also, I enjoyed reading your blog in July. Hope I get the chance to keep one!

I'm too lazy to figure out how to start a poll. My guess is that offers begin to go out on Wednesday, the 16th. People have to be hired by the 30th, right? And to be hired you have to pass a print and terrorist data base check. When you start adding days to mail that stuff out and days to mail it back and processing time...the calendar starts to run out of days to get all that done. Wednesday is just a guess. The only thing I know is that the fiscal year ends September 30 and money for stuff like new employees has to be "spent" by that day.

I am going to guess Thursday, September 17, starting between 8-9 in the morning. It is a smaller cert, but there are a lot of transfers to deal with. I figure they already have a good idea about who they want to hire. It is just a matter of figuring out where the empty slots are, and who is going where.

Its odd how SSA does ALJ transfers so late in the new ALJ hiring process. It would be good to know what city slots are filled by transfers before sending applicants the Geographic availability list. Of course, the entire process has been odd.

I bet September 21 - that makes it 3 weeks prior to the start date, similar to the last round of hirings AND they can place people without regard to all the newbies who cannot put in for transfer until September 22.

Good luck to everyone. I have been at my new office for two weeks now. I have enjoyed every minute of it. There is something gratifying about actually have the ability of making a difference in someone's life when you find the case meritorious. And on the other hand, it's also good to let people know they need to move on if they don't meet the eligibility guidelines.
Someone once told me being an ALJ is one of the best jobs in the federal government. Sure, we are not District Court judges. But there is still much satisfaction to be found in the lives we touch every day. To be a judge is to have the privilege to decide, and there is definitely no shortage of decisions that needs to be made here. ;D
