Congrats to all the new ALJs. Don't let the prestige get to your head. Remember, regardless of all the squabbles between management and union, we are responsible to the American people. Those that appear before you are usually the downtrodden of our society. They may be desperate and needy, but they are still a part of our society and should be treated with fairness, dignity and respect. Don't ever think of a claimant just as another number, for ultimately, we exist because of their needs. Good luck and enjoy your new career, judge.

Well said, ALJD! And to add my two paws' worth of advice:
When you read the files before the hearings, you will form an opinion. You have to - if you are human. Do not be surprised when you go ino the hearing and change your mind. It happens frequently, and that, my friends, is why we always must have this ALJ hearing process: These are human beings, and all the written words and doctors' diagnoses and DDS evaluations cannot tell the whole story. And even with the advantage of conducting the hearings, we will make mistakes both ways - because we are human, and it is OK. We simply must do the best we can and give each claimant the best that we have.
It is a great job, and a great responsibility.

Diceman - I heard Queens had no openings due to a transfer. Are you sure your information is correct? Yep. I heard it from the new ALJ herself. BTW, this makes the second of my colleagues from this cert to get a position. We're not from SSA so there is hope.

I received an offer last week for Florida. I have followed the postings on this board for the past year so I want to thank everyone for the great advice and the funny songs and poems. Best wishes to everyone else who is still awaiting the call. I look forward to meeting everyone who will be in the October class in Falls Church.

Just wondering whether the interview made any difference to hiring persons or whether they just go on scoring from the interview. So I started a poll--log in to vote. Thanks.
