Hi! Marcia Brady here...
I've been identified as a 3 striker in the past...but my references are being checked as well. More than half of my references have been contacted. Frankly, I haven't thought of the process or the Board much at all...until one of my references called me. Go figure...and I've rather enjoyed the little boost of excitement! A nice dose of anticipation, regardless of the outcome, is not a bad thing! I was a bit disappointed in 2008 when the ship set sail and left me at the dock but since that time I've simply moved on mentally. So, for now, I'll just enjoy the high of knowing my references are being checked!!!
In the meantime, my girls are preparing for their senior years in high school and we are up to our eyeballs in college stuff!!! Goodness, I don't think getting into college was this much of an ordeal back in my day!!!
Good luck to all and keep in touch!
Hang tight and stay cool.
Peace
Marcia B.

At last, at least 3 of my references have been called. Now I can go back to worrying!

Because the cert's out, I'm bumping this up. Congratulations to all who made the cert.
Oh, and in my humble opinion it's fine to wear your nice pantsuit to the interview.
Good luck to all!

I'll ask, so those who have been through more than one cert. can provide their wisdom, yet again.
I completed the background pages, GAL, etc., and returned them by email yesterday a few hours after receiving Bob Gehlken's email.
The content of the forms was essentially identical to last year's cert. in terms of employers and references. (They used a different form this cert. but the data was the same.)
I followed the sage advice on this thread last time around. Called my employers and references, sent follow-up emails thanking them, highlighting points in my resume and advising them on how I'd like them to handle the questions.
My question is, having just been through the reference verification nine months ago, will SSA personnel go through the same background checks? Do I need to call my references again and dust off the same explanatory email?
Thanks. ht

Thanks. ht Hi hilltopper-- Yes, the data is the same, but only asking for 10 years of past employment vs. every employer since you passed the bar makes that part a lot quicker, and frees up some job references to use on the reference side. I'm assuming they are going to do the calls again. First, I'm no sure what they "save" from the time before, if anything (that would be a lot of info to store somewhere, either in hard copy or some other form, and I hope they DO make the calls, as they missed at least one person last time. I've already made some of the heads- up phone calls, as I'm filling out the form, and I'll be dusting off the email, too. Looking forward to input from the "veterans" who have been on the certs more than once!

8-)It may be a bad or good thing, depending on circumstances. But you have to list some people whether you want to or not. Long ago, when I was going through the application process, I was a Workers Comp administrative Judge As part of the process had to list all the cases I had heard, the issues and participants on both sides, attorneys for the claimant and employer/carrier. So I had no choice but to list the good with the bad, you can't please everybody. Back then, after your voucher process and written demonstration, and your were successful, you were summoned to the US regional (not SSA) office to appear before a three person panel. The panel consisted of a local attorney, civil service person, and an Administrative Law Judge. My ALJ was the regional chief for region four OHA. In directing his questions to me, he noted that a lot of those that vouchered me indicated I tended to favor the employer/carrier. I replied that I was sure there also were a lot of them that said I favored the claimant. Got on the register and was selected.

I'm a workers' comp ALJ now, never practiced in that area before I took the bench. And, I was an ALJ before that for another agency. So, I don't have any "adversary" references who would remember who I was-- last adversarial work I did as an atty was over 20 years ago. I have listed nonadversarial references (from both sides) who can speak to my work on the bench and whether I can handle the SSA job.

Northwest, thanks very much for this information. I knew I had seen it on here before, but I've never been on a cert before, so didn't have to use it. I will definitely send my references this information.

I have listed nonadversarial references (from both sides) who can speak to my work on the bench and whether I can handle the SSA job. I, too, have primarily worked as an ALJ. The adversaries I listed are those attorneys who appear, or have appeared, in front of me as they can attest to my effectiveness as a presiding judge during an adversarial proceeding...hope that helps.

I used adversaries and during the cases I tried against the over the years we had some tense moments. However, I was usually not a totally awful person and they came through for me as references - in fact, they were enthusiastic. My experience was positive and having spoken to many lawyers about this over the years, I have fond that most folks, unless you have been truly awful, will help you out.
Also, let your references know what is important to SSA - there is guidance in this thread (the superb first post by Northwest) that I sent and really helped. That is, that you can move things, that you are collegial, etc.

Knowing I probably got ripped by some of those that vouchered me, I joked that it was self defeating giving me a high recommendation was a way to get rid of me. Like you said, must have been enough that approved me, as I got on the register and was selected.

Here's a question - in my past job (within 10 years), I worked for a large corporation that will only verify employment, but that does not allow supervisors to provide detailed reports on former employees. As an added twist, the section for which I worked was disbanded a few years after I left. Do I list an alternate person to rate my work ethic?

leprechaun; I have been self employed for the last 18+ years. I filled in the alternate rater section of the next former employer section.

Any current intel as to whether the questions are the same in fall 2014 as the questions featured in this thread? I don't know for sure, but I a$$umption would be the questions are the same or pretty similar to those asked of the first certs' references. Just my opinion.

Any current intel as to whether the questions are the same in fall 2014 as the questions featured in this thread? Gaiden's linked thread right above your post implies the questions were the same this past summer. Can't imagine they've changed them too much over the last 4-5 months.
