Let me be blunt. Anyone who puts all of their eggs in the ALJ sweepstakes basket is either independently wealthy, or an idiot. Its the career equivalent of emptying your 401k to buy Pick 6 tickets. Blunt is the val way. If its any solace, I gave up after being passed over for two years and watching on this Board as scores and scores of lurkers popped up like mushrooms and announced that they were going to Region X Y or Z. I got disgusted and bought a house--a move that later proved shall I say, less than wise, I then got hired literally out of the blue and became an orphan. However, I have never been happier. Every Judge I have met has a story. Some involve an almost seamless hire, others spend years and years on the Register. The point here is that you ALWAYS need a plan B and it helps to have very thick skin.

And I disagree that Awaiting Results is the kiss of death so keep your chin up. I think the kiss of death is when you get listed on a cert for a job in one of the country's "belts" (Rust Belt, Bible Belt, Corn Belt, Cotton Belt, Jell-O Belt, Stroke Belt, Sun Belt, etc.). Hmmmm, tell me more about this Jell-O Belt.

Steelrain, One reason you are focused now on the possibility of an ALJ position is that we are right in the middle of the application process. You are spending emotional energy and lots of time preparing this application. Spend more time learning about the job your friend is helping you pursue. Since that is a closer opportunity, focus on it and learn everything you can about it. You may think you already know, but look up every detail about the organization and the work you would do if you went there. Your friend may recommend folks in the organization you can talk to about what their experience there. Spend as much time learning about it as you have the ALJ job. It will begin to look like the life/soul saver you need and that will improve your chances of getting the job. Talking to other attorneys will open other avenues too. Also work with your friend to make it clear you would/will help him too in any way you can. In the real world, your friends political capital does not obligate you to stay with that organization forever. Read one of those self help books on landing a new job. It will help you look at more opportunities instead of viewing an ALJ gig as your only life line. Your chips are on the table for the ALJ gig and we will all be here waiting for the next roll of the dice together, but keep moving. (I am sure there is some reason behind every dice roll as Pixie told us, it just looks pretty random from my perspective.)

I mailed the application yesterday. The only delay was getting all my college transcripts in. The posted deadline for all applications is July 26, so more waiting July is going to be one stressful month...
